Rumo(u)rs are the Devils wanted the Flames to retain some salary and Calgary balked and thus the deal died.

Fascinating similarities right now between Calgary and Nashville. Both have goalies making around the same AAV, both have 1 year left on their contracts. Both are on the fringe of the playoffs. Both goalies are considered to be above-average to good tenders. Oh and both have AHL-level goalies that could be the future of their parent teams in the near future.

Calgary seems fine with moving on and does not see their goalie as part of the future. Nashville is not at all there (yet). Seems like the fanbase in Calgary would be OK with trading their goalie, OTOH, they Preds fans might string Trotz up on the shiny new 10 foot statue of Pekka Rinne if he trades their goalie.
