Don't get me wrong, anti-vaxxers are some of the biggest idiots out there, but I'm not sure why a 12 year old would need Covid-19 vaccination as a pre-req for surgery. I guess they just are trying to reduce chances of infection for all patients? :noidea:

I was just talking to my wife who is a health care professional - Following the heart transplant procedure, the patient is put on immune suppressant medication to ensure that the body will not reject the new heart. Thus, anyone being considered for a heart transplant needs to be fully vaccinated in order to ward off various infections/viruses including COVID-19. The last thing the medical team wants to do is potentially waste a good viable heart on someone who is not up on their vaccinations.

Not only the covid vaccine but all in general. Essentially, don't want to give the heart to someone that is at higher risk due to preventable measures.

EDIT: Sorry @dash I posted this at the same time. :suds: and you said it way better than I ever could!

Also, it once again highlights that you can't pick and choose the medical science you believe in - Either you go whole cloth and believe in vaccinations or you don't. Just don't visit the hospital when you get really sick from measles or COVID-19 and take up a hospital bed when there are sick people who need it for other reasons (heart attack/ stroke / traffic accident etc.)

I mean, it's like saying Poland should have made peace with Germany when the Germans invaded Poland on September 1st, 1939

I remember getting into a debate about gun control and one of the fun freaks said that if the Jews had guns back then, the holocaust never would have happened. this is not the same but its just as an absurd thought.

I also realized this is not a discussion that will find common ground... I bet they voted Trump

It's a children's hospital. Very challenged and susceptible patients...

I have a cousin who needed a liver transplant. The amount of digging they did into her past medical history was crazy. They actually traced the hepatitis that reared it's head in her sixties to a blood transfusion she got when she was 13.

They understand how the body works, and will do everything in their power to make it a success, regardless of what YOU personally believe.

My cousin is a reasonable woman, did everything they asked, had the transplant in June and is 100% recovered.

They can do pretty amazing things now. My brother's best friend got cirrhosis of the liver and needed a transplant. Oddly enough never a heavy drinker. They found someone to donate half of her liver and the surgery was done last August. I saw him at a birthday party a few weeks ago and he looked great. Happy for him because he's a good guy and had kids later in life and has three young ones under 12.

Supposedly the donor's liver will fully regenerate in 8 weeks. Pretty cool.,
