Just Plane Stupidity

• Ridiculous the blame game from partisans blaming each other about the plane crash without any details, the worst of those has been Trump's pathetic and unfounded bigotry.
• Silly that one accident after 16 years of air travel with no fatalities in a country that has more than 40,000 flights and 3 million flights per day is being viewed so negatively. That's an insanely successful system with a streak of like 200 million + straight flights without a fatal crash. Accidents happen, mistakes are made, and they are exceedingly rare and exceedingly sad. Early objective evidence suggests the controllers did their job and likely the helicopter pilot made a mistake. Time will tell.
• But this shouldn't be a major story except for our own lust for drama and tragedy. Something close to 250 people are killed by auto accidents and guns EVERY fucking DAY in America. So for the scoreboard, that is 70 deaths from air travel in 16 years (something we clearly are doing well) and 1.4 million deaths for cars/guns (both the top killers of children). Which is a problem?
• FAA standards for hiring are not impacted by DEI programs and DEI programs in general don't even impact or focus on hiring quality outside of helping attune leaders to the fact that they might be missing out on talent and skills due to inherent biases. If you think DEI programs results in lower employee quality, you are only telling people (1) you don't understand what they are and (2) you're not someone important because you've never had to learn about what these programs actually are.
• In fact, it's harder to be an air traffic controller than it is to be a pilot. If you have any responsibility in your work, I'm sure you know that most decisions are trade offs. In the abstract, hiring more controllers would likely mean lower quality, but having too few means you can be understaffed. Both would be problems and since economies don't operate in perfect systems or vacuums, a certain rate of inefficiency of failure is guaranteed. Instead of honest and productive conversations about that, we have attacks, blame, and credit taking. Pathetic.
• Speaking of pathetic, a program for hiring individuals with disabilities, though it would not be anyone not meeting the FAA's required standards for air traffic controllers anyway, was started in... (click play and wait for it)...

I read/heard that the FAA disability program even dates back earlier (to 2013). Thus, if Trump was so vehemently opposed to it, he had his entire first term to dismantle it. I guess he was too busy golfing.
