Chris Hogan expected to sign offer sheet with Patriots

The Patriots are doing their best to lure Chris Hogan away from the Bills.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday that the Buffalo wideout, a restricted free agent, isexpected to sign a three-year, $12 million, heavily guaranteed contract to join New England, per a source involved in the deal.

The Bills have five days to match the offer or lose Hogan without any compensation from the Patriots. Given the front-loaded structure of the pact, the Bills aren't expected to match, per Rapoport.

So why is New England chasing the little-used receiver who became a Hard Knocks fan favorite as aDolphins rookie in 2012?

Despite catching just 36 balls for 450 yards last season, Hogan -- known as "7-Eleven" because, in theory, he's always open -- impressed coach Bill Belichick with his football IQ during a visit this week, per the Bills' official website. That matters in Foxborough, where wideouts are asked to play complex roles in Belichick's offense. Chad Johnson, for instance, was released by the team years ago because he couldn't pick up the playbook. But that's not all:

At 6-foot-1 and 220 pounds, Hogan is bigger than both Danny Amendola and Julian Edelman. The trio would give quarterback Tom Brady a reliable collection of receivers to pair along with game-changing tight end Rob Gronkowski. We still expect New England to look for a downfield burner to add to the mix.

Bill Belichick may have a lacrosse catch playing partner this season.

The Patriots have made it awfully tough for the Buffalo Bills to match the offer of a 3-year, $12 million-dollar contract for WR Chris Hogan and he’s reported to have signed his offer today according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. That would leave Buffalo five days to match the Patriots offer, but front-loaded with a $5.5 million cap hit in Year 1 will be very difficult for the Bills to counter.

The Patriots obviously learned their lesson when giving Emanuel Sanders a low-ball offer in 2013 that the Steelers ultimately matched. Buffalo put the lowest RFA (restricted free agent) tender on Hogan at $1.67 million and have very little room under the cap. They’ll have to get very creative to save Hogan which would beg the question then, would they be doing it to save their player or to tweak the Patriots?

Hogan, 6’1, 220-pounds played primarily in the slot for Buffalo but is a fast (4.47-40), good sized receiver who can play inside or outside and he was praised from QB Tyrod Taylor for his ability to run precise routes and get out of his breaks extremely quickly. He’s only 27 and is very athletic (36” vertical, 6.74 3-Cone Drill), his football I.Q. is said to be very high, which is important when trying to master the Patriots difficult offense and route tree for wide receivers. He was nicknamed 7-11 during the HBO show “Hard Knocks” for his ability to be always open. He’ll join Julian Edelman, Rob Gronkowski, Danny Amendola (for now), Chris Harper, Keshawn Martin and Aaron Dobson in the Patriots passing game.

The fast, athletic Hogan should be an immediate fit in the offense and at a minimum should become a very good complimentary piece. The clock is ticking Rex… -

Glad I could Carnzo.

I am glad the Patriots have at least a WR over 6 feet!

He's guaranteed $5.5M this year. He ain't no camp body. This guy didn't get his nickname 7-11 as a joke, he is always open because he works his ass off to get rid of defenders. The Patriots had a hell of a time covering him and BB didn't miss what the guy was doing to the Patriots. Now he'll have a QB who can get the ball to him.

This is a serious addition.

Oh yeah, he blew BB away after one look at the playbook..........Football I.Q.

I like this kid. He is a big WR who can play inside or out. 3 things stood out to me when reading about him.

1-He has never missed a game in his 3 yrs.
2-Quick off the LOS.
3-A "technician" when he runs his routes.

All things that TB likes. Get open, go where the ball is suppose to be and I will get it there. I seem to think his was on BB radar the whole time no matter what happened with Jones, Matthews and Sanu. Now the question is...what happens to Dola??

Just wondering, now that the Pats have signed Hogan, can they now renegotiate his contract to lessen the cap hit this year or do they need to wait for at least a year before doing so? Does anyone know the answer to this question?

I like the Hogan signing. I was concerned we'd pay for Sanu to drop more balls than LaFell did!
Hogan is going to be a good fit.

No worries on Dobson. Costs nothing to let him play in camp.....

Seriously? That would be pretty fucked up. I'd tell you and the Pats to go fuck themselves.

What they've offered his is what they have to pay. Check Miguel Benzan and he'll have the exact numbers that Hogan and every other Patriot count against the cap......to the penny.
