Doubtful.
Anyway I am excited for the win. As @58crash mentioned a tackle on Jamaal Charles well out of bounds alongside the non call on the PI were two pretty bad gaffes by the crew. I know Chargers fans are complaining about Roby hooking KA on his pick, but Roby was indeed called for PI a couple times and the contact he did have on his pick wasn't PI. He doesn't change KA's direction or interfere with him. KA went full bitch trying to sell the PI but thankfully the crew didn't buy it. Overall they could have done a better job but we say that about the refs every week so I guess it's no news there.
Again: it's still frustrating when refs call inconsistently but a lot easier to deal with after a win. Plus the offense seemed to lose its mojo after the pic. That wasn't the refs. It's still a work in progress but there is a lot of potential here.
A better opponent than the Chargers lies ahead.
Agreed not really much new when it comes to the refs missing calls. My favorite is actually when Shaq Barrett beat his guy around the Corner and Okung wraps him up from behind with no call with the ref standing right there. That was the long TD pass to Benjamin where there was a coverage blown. Shouldn't have been a TD.
1) As for the game definitely some promising things in this one. 3rd down efficiency was very nice. Loved the aggressive play calling to actually pick up 1st downs instead of throw it short of the sticks. I loved that the team was aggressive throwing down the field and Siemian was on point.
2) And Randymon I have to give credit where credit is due. Siemian impressed me this game and if he continues to play like that will quickly win me over that he could be the guy moving forward for this team. He showed decent poise with a collapsing pocket. He fit some throws into some tight windows. I loved that he used his feet to make some big plays and really on those runs he only had 1 run that he took a big hit so he was at least smart about it.
He still needs to eliminate the "oh crap he just threw a pick-6 oh wait thankfully it was dropped!" type plays that he has every once in a while. Going to give me a heart attack if he keeps that up. And his actual interception should have been a penalty of either defensive holding or DPI so can't really count that one.
3) We have a TE and 3rd WR sighting in this game! The Chargers actually have a very nice 1-2 punch at CB so the need for others to step up was a necessity. 3rd option players in Fowler and the TE's combined for 119 yards and 2 TD's. Not sure that ever happened last year.
4) Kind of connected to the last one but the ability to attack the middle of the field was so nice to see.
5) The run game looked pretty darn good. The team picked up some short yardage plays that did not happen often last year and both CJ and Charles showed to be a nice 1-2 combo. OL opened up some nice holes and got some good push.
6) Loved that the Bronco safeties/LB's held their own against the TE combo of Henry and Gates. Until the 4th quarter didn't even hardly notice those guys were playing. Justin Simmons especially had a very good 1st game. He had no missed tackles and from what I could tell wasn't even targeted during the game. He was out of position on the Allen TD though as it looked like Harris was getting after him for not helping on inside leverage. Still for him replacing TJ Ward very good first game. Darian Stewart did find himself out of position on that big TD to Benjamin as well so definitely some things to clean up but the age of TE's dominating this defense might not be the case moving forward.
7) Run defense outside of 1 run looked much improved. And that is with Kerr and Crick sitting out and our depth definitely being tested. Harris and Gotsis played lights out in this game. Love that we have depth at this position.
8) Up and down day for Roby. Big play obviously in the interception but was a bit too aggressive at times getting some really bad penalties called on him. He did have a tough match up though of the Broncos trusting him to line up against Allen quite a bit. I appreciate the confidence in him but still would rather see the Broncos move 1 of their 2 All-Pro CB's into that coverage and follow him throughout the game. They are getting paid for a reason.
9) Decent debut game for Bolles. Definitely blew a few blocking assignments but for a rookie LT going against Ingram and Bosa all night long I thought he handled the situation pretty well. Watson on the other hand is a huge liability. Saw the Broncos a couple of times try to give him some help but to me that needs to be more of an all game kind of thing for the most part. Chargers did it to Von almost the entire game and kept him in check.
10) Overall thought for a 1st game of the season against a divisional foe this was a very nice win. yeah let them back into it with a couple of bad turnovers (although both were pretty controversial), but some very promising things for this team moving forward. They showed me much more than I thought they would. I think it has been pretty clear on here that I don't have the highest expectations for this team this year and one game doesn't completely change that but like I said they showed more than I thought they could this early in the season with so many new moving parts.
For the most part I liked the playcalling on offense (until about half way through the 4th quarter and of course the 2 minute drill to end the half). McCoy showed some creativity that wasn't there last year or the year before.
Defensively Woods called a very good game until about half way into the 4th quarter. Not a fan of his play call when the Chargers have to throw to the sideline because of no timeouts and we bring this huge blitz giving Rivers an easy completion to the outside and moving them into easier field goal range.
And of course everybody's favorite new coach Olivo has to be very happy with how his special teams units produced. Punt coverage was down right impressive. Kick off coverage not much to talk about. Punt return we just saw on the very first return a bigger play than our special teams units produced all of last year. McKenzie got away with one on his 2nd return but hopefully that is a learning experience for him. Hated seeing McManus miss that field goal that could have really been a huge dagger for the team but it was beyond 50 yards so have to keep that in mind.
