If I remember he had real big platoon splits, so he only hit either righties or lefties. I think he was also a good pinch hitter. I think the first name was Joe.

Harry used to call him Joe LaFay, and I think that is the correct pronunciation

Yeah, .537 OPS against LHP. Even Howard is like "yikes"

But he was clutch during the second half of the season in '83. That was an interesting team. They were loaded with old all stars and hall of famers. I think at one point they had Perez, Morgan, Rose, Schmidt, and Carlton

I was just looking at their roster--talk about a window that was closing fast... No wonder they sucked for the next decade. Maybe if they didn't trade away Sandberg and Franco the mid to late 80's would have been a little better, but their pitching still sucked.

Yeah, the Wheeze Kids. Anti-tobacco ads should have shown Tony Perez and Joe Morgan with "Wheeze Kids" pull-over jackets on smoking cigarettes, and then them losing Game 6 to the O's.

That team reminds me a little of the '11 Phillies. I mean Carlton was like Halladay, old and about to decline, but still dominant. Denny Hudson was Roy Oswalt, though better than Oswalt was in '11. And actually, that's where the comparisons end.:plane:

Yeah, it was John Denny, but you're right-after him and Carlton it went downhill fast. And I think that was a fluke year for Denny. He won the Cy Young but I don't think he was better than average other than that one year. They had a couple good relief pitchers though

Now that I look at it they leaned on those long relievers heavily. The bullpen has a 29-16 Win Loss record. They must have tried to get 8 or 9 out of Carlton, 7 or 8 out of Denny and had a quick hook with the rest of those guys

What the fuck is up with me and names today. I combined John Denny and Charles Hudson. Maybe I'm getting alzheimer's. At least I didn't confuse him with the diner Denny's. Now I've got to run- I've got to cook my Tasty Cakes in the oven

Yeah that wouldn't be good. I don't even like those anyway. I much prefer Devil Ding Dong's
