It's a bummer for sure Gentlemen, of that, there is no doubt.

However, we need to examine this 2yr, $26mil offer. This is what he signed AFTER the Giants were no longer a serious target. The Giants went out and made moves to get two outfielders. With Pagan, Cabrera, Schierholtz, Belt, Huff and Justin Christian in tow, it was going to be a crowded outfield before Beltran. I think the Beltran group lost a ton of leverage after the Giants made these moves. If the Giants offered him 2 years and $26mil before they had made those moves, his price tag would have most likely been higher.
Also something to think about (although it's pure speculation on my part) is that with a 2 year offer, Beltran still might be looking at one last contract with an AL team after its expiration. The Cardinals lineup and ballpark give him a much better chance at more money at the end of those two years.

Just food for thought.

The Cardinals are relevant again though, a Holliday - Berkman - Beltran heart of the order along with Wainright coming back and they should be very tough.

That's a pretty astute point. Good call.

This is the only thing holding my last shreds of sanity in place. I guess the one lingering hope I always had hidden deep in that 'please God let this happen' area of my mind was ..... Belt making everyone forget that we ever wanted Beltran ..... with a now crowded outfield and a crowed 1B .... I'm starting to feel that slip away as well .....

Come back in from the ledge my man. It's December....we're going to be a really good team next year, and you don't want to go all pantshitty now...

I hear you Tzill - just a little bummed - sort of hoped that Beltran would materialize even though I knew it wouldn't. I think we all had a 'Holiday Shopping List' ... I would have been happy with Melky or Angel plus some sort of a middle of the line up bat. I think we'll be OK in 2012 ..... feels like I went shopping for a Mercedes, found it a little too expensive so opted for a Cadillac .... still a great car .... but still a little disappointed ..... really can't get all pantshitty during the trading season .... games are won on the field .... that's when I'll need the kaopectate .....

Oh well. Beltran would've probably gotten injured in the middle of the season anyway. I hope our refusal to sign anybody this offseason means that we are signing Timmy and Cain longterm.

So, moving forward...

...does this mean we still have room in the budget?

Even if we did, is there anyone left available worth pursuing?

Or do we save our "surplus", if it even exists, for a mid-season acquisition?

Am I an asshole?

"Those are questions."

I think we're done as far as the budget goes. If we add a significant salary, it will come at the expense of Affeldt.
