Daniel Carcillo received five for boarding and a game for this hit on Tom Gilbert tonight.

Or how about the refs start calling penalties for early contact? I agree its a bad hit, but I have been noticing more and more that refs are letting the early hits go when attack the puck.

Need to start calling 2 mins on these and get them out of the game. Only way to avoid this situation.

I say 3 games.

Chicago Blackhawks forward Dan Carcillo has been suspended indefinitely pending a hearing with the Department of Player Safety regarding his hit on Edmonton's Tom Gilbert Monday night.

The incident in question occurred during the second period when Carcillo and Gilbert were chasing a puck into the Oilers' zone and Carcillo checked Gilbert into the boards. Gilbert was injured on the play and is expected to miss Tuesday night's game against Buffalo with a lower-body injury. Carcillo also appeared to be hurt on the play.

Carcillo was assessed a five-minute boarding penalty and a game misconduct for the hit. The Oilers would score twice on the ensuing power play en route to a 4-3 win.

The Blackhawks signed Carcillo this offseason to a one-year free agent contract worth $775,000. This season he has 2 goals and 9 assists in 28 games played.

Carcillo has already been suspended previously this season.

Seriously though, this is what pisses me off about these kinds of plays. They're committed by players who have little to no positive impact on their teams fortunes; they are often committed against players who are integral to their team's success.

At some point some accountability will have to be taken by teams that employ repeat offenders.
