We might see an announcement today or tomorrow on this. It appears from all reports that this is pretty much a done deal with the coach of the Preds for 15 years starting again with Washington.

Good decision?
Is Trotz a good fit for the Caps?
Does it make sense for the organization to make (what I"m guessing will be) a significant commitment to a coach without a GM yet in place?

This is a good move - he's a good coach and they need that - they'll probably be able to get their GM like Ray Shero or Mike Fenton, both who have experience with Barry Trotz

I don't think any GM worth his salt would have trouble working with Barry Trotz.

I think hes a good coach ... would have liked to see him in Vancouver ... I think he can coach an offensive/skilled team. He played a system with Nashville according to the personnel he had

that being said ... why not hire the GM first? is it because Leonsis worried he would get hired by Vancouver?

If the Caps are interested in Shero or Fenton as GM ... arent they available??? ... like yesterday????

That's why they're going after Barry Trotz first - they know he won't be available for as long as those GM's would

Trotz is a flexible coach (no no-neck jokes please!) and sure, he can probably work with any GM but the GM should be the easy hire here and with candidates available that should have already been done ...especially with the draft combine starting today ... you want your GM to ultimately make these decisions not the owner

They might let the Caps assistant GM do the work to start out, since he knows the ins and outs of the team already, and then they can hire the GM later - kind of like what the Penguins are doing with Jason Botterill

I think this is a totally wrong route to take

these teams faltered for a reason

Id want a fresh set of eyes (from a different organization) to come in with a different take on draft eligible players to challenge the ideas of the scouts (and asst. gms) that are in place ... instead of relying on the potential groupthink

If they can land Trotz, that's more important than the GM. Because Trotz can get the most out of whoever he gets on the ice. They can hire an idiot like Pierre or MacLean and Trotz will make the team as good as they can be.
