SAN JOSE SHARKS: $11.7m-plus

The Sharks can take on some big tickets, although contracts extending beyond this season could create tagging problems. They're a top spender for 2012-13, with $55.5 million already committed to 14 players.

How TSN got that 11.7mill plus is beyond me but hey i dont get paid for this sort of stuff

Probably taking their numbers from capgeek.com. They show the Sharks will have just over $11.7m in cap room at the deadline if no roster changes are made.

If I understand it correctly, they can take on $11.7mil worth of contracts at the trade deadline. Meaning, the could take on a player making $7mil and $4.7mil this year in total salaries (even though the original teams would have already paid 2/3rds of it.

Is that correct?

All this cap space will mean diddly shit if Doug can't do anything with it. Doug has so few trading options left that I'm not going to expect much toward the trade deadline. I just hope if Doug makes another deal it ends up working for the Sharks.

That's correct. They can take on $11.7m worth of "Annual" salary at the deadline.

Please keep Nash away from this team... 7.8 for a guy thats never hit 50, and has bascially been putting up Pavelski numbers the past few years. SJ already has 2 of the most overpaid players in the league on the roster, they dont need a 3rd. Add that to the fact that SJ seems to be a black hole that kills goal scorers career & counting this year, Nashs totals have gone down 3 years in a row, I dont see why anyone would want a 7.8mil 30-35 goal scorer on the roster. Everyone already cried that Heatley gets paid so much and his goal totals have dropped, so why would these same people want Nash?

i hear ya, plus we would have to give up way too many good pieces for him. still it's fun to think about!

I think a lot of people look at Nash and see a player who puts up 30+ goals consistantly playing with less than quality linemates like Vermette, Brassard, Prospal, Umberger, etc. and think if he came to the Sharks his production would skyrocket. Especially with the chemistry he and Thornton showed together playing on the National stage. Weather that would be the case or not is very much debatable though. Personally I don't like the idea of aquiring Nash because I don't think the Sharks can win a Cup with that top heavy of a line up and I don't think they can afford to give up the assets it would take to get him.

As far as Nash compared to Heatley, Nash is a much, much better player now then Heatley was when the Sharks got him. His skating is lightyears beyond Heatley's, Nash is better defensively, and he's a better puck posession player.

I'd like to see Nash on the Sharks for several reasons. The first is the Sharks obviously aren't gonna win the Cup with the team they have now. I think we can all pretty much agree on that. Secondly the Sharks farm system is already gutted. I really don't care about draft picks anymore. In a few years time when everyone on the team is old and sucks more than they do now the Sharks are gonna stink and stink for a long time because they have no replacements in the system. Trading away low level prospects and more draft picks isn't gonna change anything. When you consider those things I say why not go for it. We all know Thornton can still bring it when he actually tries to play hockey, maybe getting someone like Nash would get him going more often that not. Hell even 50% of the time would be a major improvement. Don't get me wrong I still don't think that getting Nash is going to bring a Cup to San Jose. But like I said why the hell not. The Sharks really don't have anything to lose IMO.

Flame on!

I'm kind of in the same boat. I feel like I've become a worse Sharks fan over the years since Jumbo came aboard. The Sharks and SF Giants are the only two teams I follow and they're both ingrained in my life. That said, I've just been so "meh" this year and it has kept growing since the Anaheim Playoff debacle. I usually watch at least 77 games per year of the Sharks since I was in college (love me some CenterIce). This year I think I may have watched 20 or so games in full.....maybe 10 more games on and off. It's just so hard to get pumped up for games when they team comes out flat so often.

I don't want Nash (he doesn't impress me except in spurts.....kind of like Thornton), but I want what I can't have.....a major shake up involving Thornton. The hardest thing for me to watch about Thornton is that he could be an absolute dominating beast if he really wants to. I truly think that he could be a top 5 player in the game if he'd just bring it consistently.

At this point, given the price of players (i.e. - Downie/Quincey for a 1st Rounder essentially), I'd be happy with Moen or taking a gamble on Hemsky if his price has fallen. With Moen, at least the bottom 6 forwards would be tough as hell to play against both defensively and physically. Then you just have to hope that Havlat comes back and is effective:

Pavelski-Thornton-Wingels
Marleau-Couture-Clowe
McGinn-Handzus/Moore-Havlat
Winchester-Handzus/Moore-Moen

or if you want to take on the injury laden Hemsky (assuming his price comes down.....i.e. - not a 1st Rounder):

Pavelski-Thornton-Hemsky
Marleau-Couture-Clowe
McGinn-Handzus/Moore-Havlat
Winchester-Handzus/Moore-Wingels

Slimpikins

Yeah because the last time we picked up an over rated sniper that doesn't know where the dzone is, with an albartross of a contract, and a NTC that worked out so well for us. Why not do it again?

I think for every metric that would show it as a similar move to acquiring Heatley there's one that shows it would be better getting Nash, maybe more.

Like the other two dudes above, I'm indifferent about it. So long as Couture & Vlasic stay put. To me, those are the two guys who you couldn't replace when factoring in age, upside, current cap figure/current value to the team. If Burns continues to improve he could join them, imo.

that pretty much sums me up, except for the part about being a Giants fan, swap that with Warriors fan (even worse).
