What you're saying does make sense, but wouldn't Canelo and/or De La Hoya have made a statement already? Something like "Yes, they stripped the belt and gave it to GGG, but I'm going to get it back immediately. I'm taking him on next no matter what!!!"

You're probably correct. I have seen they're still saying that the GGG fight is their priority, and still saying they'll fight him next. They did come out and say they just didn't want to be forced by an artificial deadline. But you're right, I haven't seen him come out and say he'll win the belt back or Anything. They're mostly trying to play it down like the belt doesn't really mean anything.

Like I said I haven't given up hope. But personally I don't see it. I think GGG is at least as popular if not more so. They're comparing his PPV numbers against some random guy no non boxing fans have ever heard of vs Canelo's PPV numbers against a HoF guy in Cotto, who is Puerto Rican and which was for the lineal MW belt, and a Mexican vs an English fighter (three biggest fanbases) and that fight was on Cinco de Mayo weekend. They're not comparable. I don't think Canelo should even be the A-side. Especially not now that GGG is the champion and Canelo the challenges.

I'm guessing, the biggest problem is that GGG is knocking out everyone he faces and Canelo(but especially his management) is afraid of being embarrassed like that for fear of what it might do to his career going forward. It makes sense for sure, but def looks suspect...

I'll give Canelo some credit in that he's already fought and (allegedly) beat two of the 6 guys ranked ahead of Smith. But I can't see anybody buying that PPV, which is gonna kill his leverage/bargaining power when he does face GGG. Although not being Mexican myself I don't know how committed that racial fan base is and whether or not they'll buy any fight he makes anyways.

Just recently saw that DLH was quoted as saying he thought a 90-10 split of the prize pool was completely fair "given what they have accomplished in the sport" and while he was willing to start negotiations there, he didn't expect to ever accept much lower than that. Otherwise it wouldn't be fair to his fighter.

Just to be clear, that's not a winner takes 90% of all gate and ppv money. He really said pretty much the only way Canelo would fight GGG is if Canelo gets 90% of all the money no matter the outcome.

Not sure if Mexicans are buying it, but his reputation has to have taken a big hit. If this is the new era of boxing then it might as well die completely right now. GGG and Pacquiao could be the last great boxers who fight the best. Canelo is disappointing but not nearly as disappointing to me as a Mexican as Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

I love boxing. I think a lot of the people who say "why watch boxing when I can watch UFC" are ignoring a lot of the nuance. Something like a knockdown rule can seem trivial but it's the ultimate test of willpower. A fighter is getting beat, knocked down, probably outmatched, but has to find it within himself to get back up and try to turn it around. In UFC if you get knocked down by a strike then you're pretty much as good as done. I'm not saying that one is better than the other but Boxing has it's appeal too. Promoters need to stop worrying about how much money they're making and just make the fights that will get people excited about boxing again. If nobody is watching your shitty fights then what point is there in milking a top fighter? I'm tired of watching classic fights or GGG/Canelo/any other top fighter dominate inferior opponents.
