NHLonTSN: Brendan Gallagher, Jonathan Huberdeau, and Brandon Saad named Calder Trophy Finalists. #NHL #TSN

No Yak?

/not that he should win (I think Huberdeau will), but I thought he would be one of the finalists.

maybe they figured he would never stop celebrating on stage should he win so they figured they better leave him off the ballet

I hope Huberdeau wins as he wore the logo on my avatar for 3.5 years, but I think it will end up going to Gallagher. I think it will be very close between those 2. It looked like Huberdeau was going to run away with it about half-way through the season until it became apparent that whichever line he was on was by far Florida's most dangerous line offensively, and other teams focused on shutting them down. I'd say he was the rookie with the biggest impact on his team, but all that did was lead his team to 30th place. Gallagher can actually share some of the credit for the Habs going from 15th to 2nd in the East.

You wonder if that factored in for some of the people doing the voting and if that's the case, then Jonas Brodin of the Wild should have been nominated. Logged big time minutes as a 19 year old defenseman. Of course, his offensive numbers arem't anything special, but pretty solid defensively.

Yeah I'm not sure what criteria the voters consider. I think they tend to vote for the rookie that had the best season, regardless of who may have been dealt a better hand. Huberdeau also had a very long season which may have played a part in cooling off near the end. The Q starts about 3 weeks earlier than the AHL or a normal NHL season. He also had some pretty short summers the last 3 years so an early summer this year will probably do him some good.

As for Brodin, I figured he would be the 3rd candidate. The future for Minnesota looks bright. I figured Granlund would be in the Calder discussions but he didn't even turn out to be a top 3 rookie on his team, let alone the league. That's partly because he had a disappointing 1st year in North America but also says a lot about the other rookies (Brodin, Coyle, Zucker) on the Wild.

You could also make a case for Jake Muzzin in LA, his numbers actually surpass Brodin's in several statistical categories. Of course, a lot of those Eastern voters are bagging zzz's when Muzzin is playing.

Apparently TSN has tweeted that Jonathan Huberdeau is on his way to Chicago to take part in the awards ceremonies. They seem to be implying that means he's the winner. Or at least that's the conclusion that many people are jumping to. I don't use Twitter so I didn't see it myself. Also I'm not really familiar with this new method of presenting the awards. Maybe all the nominees go?

Huberdeau it is. I bet it was really close. HNIC said they would show the numbers later for all awards to show how close it was. This could have gone to a hand full of guys including a few mentioned that weren't even nominated. It will be interesting to see what Huberdeau and Florida can do next year with 1 of MacKinnon, Jones, or Drouin.
