Serious question. Is this in any way realted to Sid not being in the game? A 4-0 loss and now this.

I'm sorry, but this game was funny to me... at least we are getting better... only 4 goals allowed in the 3rd this time around. What do you think, 3 goals allowed in the 3rd come saturday?

I sensed this when Chara scored. I knew it. Staal penalty was a joke though. Didn't even wrap the guy up with 2 minutes? That's chippy. But, defensive meltdowns kill you in the end. Too bad, because Fleury was tripping acid that game. First goal he should have had, other two were *vomit* defensive breakdowns.

A lot of shady penalties... I'm serious, I've never seen this much poor officiating in one season.

I think the lack of his presence really affects them more than the mere absence of his on ice contribution. He's clearly the glue that holds this team together. The Pens were without him once for a long period of time, and it took Geno and a backup goalie on a hot streak to keep the boat afloat. I don't know what it is about this team...but I sincerely feel like a piece is missing (beyond Sid). I mean, not having Sid has accentuated that for me...it's a glaring issue that we have no depth. We have GREAT role players, but the fact of the matter is we have 3 guys fitting one role, and no guys being our "stars". Staalsie gets a break from me still as he's basically in his preseason of sorts still, but Geno needs a bit more production. I love his heart, but he doesn't play with his head sometimes. The danger this team has is that we're handcuffed as far as making moves goes. We're strapped to the cap right now, but clearly missing something extra. Shero's made a move every year he's been here, and I trust him, but he's got some shifting to do yet.

They showed that blind side hit on Savard...looked awfully similar to the Crosby hit. I wonder why Sid waited so long to make his statement. Oh wait it was in his favor up until about 2 weeks ago.

 Yeah, it's not like Crosby said this at the time:

“At some point there’s got to be a clear indication from the league because we’ve seen this so many times now,” Penguins captain Sidney Crosby said. “You don’t like to see anyone, their own teammate or an opposing player, lay on the ice like that. That was scary.”

Anyway, pretty glad I missed this shitty game. Boston has our number this year, at least in the third period. Kind of weird that they've done that twice to us this year, after Billy Guerin's 0.4 left equalizer last year. No lead is safe between these two I guess.

The timing of that one shocked me more than anything...well, not quite as much as Recchi's extra 2. I was amazed they hit up such a vet with an unsportsmanlike, especially after watching 24/7 and seeing what a normal convo is like.

I missed the game because I was at work, but I have some general observations about the team to make:

1. We lose to trapping teams because we're weak on the wings. (Not relevant to tonight, just pointing that out.)
2. As Pix said, we have a bunch of guys who fill the same role, but some who do it better. Shero should look at that and start determining how many of each role we need and where we can make roster space for different types. For example, Kennedy, Conner, and Letestu are all the same type of player. Letestu is the best at it, so keep him. Rupp, Asham and Godard are the same type of player. Asham is the best at it, so keep him. Now we have three roster spots. I think Jeffrey should fill one of them this year. Next year, Tangradi should fill another. That would give us a legitimate top 6 I think, if they play to their potential.
3. The defensemen are awesome, but not enough of our forwards are defensively responsible enough, nor responsible enough with the puck. (I'm looking at you, Kennedy.) The forwards need to get better defensively and start playing smarter with the puck. This kind of goes back to point 2, since grinders are being asked to score, and it's clear that they're not comfortable with it.
4. The depth at center is awesome, but unless Staal or Malkin can learn the wing and produce there, we almost have to get rid of one of them. That money would then be allocated to a true top 6 winger.

That's all.

I've defended the system because it showed fruitful when we won the Cup...but now that times has worn on and we've spent significant money on our defense, the amount of money they take up is beginning to become a problem. Unless we can finally grow a winger in the AHL (DJ has promise, but need to see it reflected at NHL level), basically there's no option but to trade one. It's painful to think about because I love them all, but I think all Pens fans see the light at the end of the tunnel on this one. Sid's a lifer, and as much as I love Geno, he's the more expensive option and not defensively responsible all the time (turnover machine).

This game shows why the Penguins should not be considered in the same breath of Cup favorites as Philly, Vancouver, Detroit.

Off the top of my head, this is the fourth epic third period collapse so far this season. Two against Boston, two against NYR (came back against the Rags once and then choked it away with a minute left). This isn't counting the games that I'm sure are out there where we just gave up a smaller lead. Thinking back to the Pens back-to-back Cup Finals appearances, in the regular season, we were the team coming back and winning those character games. Now we're the lazy, arrogant team who thinks we are good enough to stop skating when we are up by two.

For a team that prides itself on its "grit" "sandpaper" and "role players" we sure as hell don't look like we have very much character with multiple losses like this.

A 12-game winning streak was great, but let's not kid ourselves. Only three teams beaten during that streak (Vancouver, NYR, Atlanta) really amount to anything. Realistically, looking at those twelve games, it would have been a disappointment to not win at least eight of them.

This team has problems, problems that the other-wordly play of Sidney Crosby masks. And I don't think the problem is necessarily secondary scoring (if we have Crosby, we will be fine, and if we don't, we aren't going to win much even with a top six winger in the mix). A top six winger wouldn't have stopped the epic collapse last night, nor the three before it.

Reality check time: the Penguins are a second round team if they don't start realizing that other teams are caring a lot more about winning than they are.
