Kirk Cousins Showing the Progress RG3 Didn't Make for Washington Redskins | Bleacher Report

these film clips show how badly Rg3 played in the pocket and what he lacked in reading defenses , identifying blitz'z and making the right call for protection , and failing to identify the best match ups for the offense

this is a study issue

now KC isnt a world beater but at least he can do this and this is why Rg3 was benched

it is also why amerson was cut , because they didnt study

now just how bad was Rg3 that a KC is a better option ?

3 years and he cant get the basics down

Great article. Years ago you didn't get this kind of coverage. Jaws and Merrill Hoge helped to make this more popular and available to fans. Now you have local guys doing this. It gives everyone the chance to learn more about the game regardless of whether you ever played or not. I love me some Xs and Os.

It also makes me think back to 2012 and the year of the read option. Kyle implemented elements of the read option, the pistol formation and caught the NFL by surprise. Griffin and later Kaepernick and Wilson all used it to great success. Defenses were so off balance that these guys looked like stars. One year later defenses caught up. The pistol is now a main stay. You can already be 4 yards behind the line of scrimmage but you give up nothing in your run offense. Seattle still uses a lot of read option. Sadly Griffin and Kap have been exposed for what they don't know and to this point still haven't learned. They still have time. They need to apply themselves.

Wasn't a huge Kirk guy going into the year but I never understood how so many ranked us 32nd, citing the QB. Have they had a look at some of the other starting QBs around the league?

This is telling information. Robert has flaws, some that can be overcome through learning and some that are more a sense or feeling. This article points out the flaws that he just hasn't learned. After 4 years, he should be showing progress in these areas, but he just isn't. This is just a matter of studying. We've now heard from 2 different coaching regimes. Robert needs to devote more time in the film room. That is all on him.

DGF, did we really deserve to be ranked higher? After how this franchise has performed over the last decade? I can completely understand why none would expect more.

IMO - yes the Redskins should have been ranked higher than 32 for one simple reason - SM. Anyone who knows football (which sadly excludes about 3/4s of the media) would expect that his influence would at least result in talent that would take this team up a few notches. Make no mistake - they should not have been labeled playoff contenders coming into the season (nor even at this time). However - honestly - beyond simple hatred for the team & owner did they deserve to be viewed as the worst team in the NFL?

The hate for this team will continue probably forever (which I actually enjoy at this time) while little by little this team will get better over the next several years. HTTR.

I never saw this as the worst team in the league. Never. The ranking came out right after all the noise out of Ashburn, as if a Tweet from the GM's wife somehow made us a worse team. Despite being a total joke for years we've never once been the worst team.

Things like this just make a great deal of the media laughable. I never understood how the jealous rage of someone's wife somehow was perceived to have this tremendous effect on the team. Heck - we even had one of our Redskins posters on this forum suggest that SM would step down as a result of this - too funny.

I certainly thought we had a chance at being the worst team, but there are two or three other teams that could vie for that position, also. As for SMs influence, a GMs affect on a team really become evident a few years down the road.

I'm not saying I agree with the ranking, only that I can understand why others might rank us there. We haven't really yet earned the right to be considered anything other than one of the worst.

Yeah I can't argue that. But there are always a handful of bad teams, it's really really tough to be the worst. And we were pretty much the consensus favorite in that category and I never bought it.

I agree with your take on the GM for the most part in that it takes several years for the full impact to take effect. However - a measure of improvement is very possible even in the first year. I believe that are seeng this now with the Redskins.

Does this mean that magically the team turns into playoff contenders from day one? No. However - you almost immediately see a change in attitude that can lead to winning games against lesser teams when in the past they would have lost these games. I believe that the Eagles game is an excellent example. There is a good chance that last season's team would have thrown in the towel & lost that game.

We will quite possibly see quite a few more losses this season. However - I also believe that there very likely will be a more competitive spirit & a team that yes is better than several of the other bottom tier teams. IMO - this has SM's signature all over it.
