Vance has been outstanding today. Pitching just lights out.

His command has been absolutely sensational.

Watson will come on to close. Melancon with a day off.

Final line on Vance: 8 IP 4 H 0 BB 5 K 0 R

What a big performance.

Raise the Jolly Roger!

Watson in a little trouble, but Gomez helped with a baserunning gaffe, and Watson got out of it. 1-0 victory, and a huge series victory in the last home game of the season.

Magic number is three for the playoffs, still in the hunt for the top wildcard spot, not so much for the division, though there's still an outside chance.

Our 3, 4, and 5 starters really turned in outstanding performances, too, in big spots. They gave up a combined 2 runs in a combined 22 IP. Our pitching is getting hot again, and at the right time.

staff has the 2nd best ERA since the all star game.
we also have the highest OPS since the all-star game.
a couple late game implosions in key games with StL and a couple others really cost us from being in a driver seat for a Home Field series and avoid the WC game.

hopefully we keep the mo and take at least 2 from atl and 2-1 vs cincy

Another big win and if SF loses today they are tied for the home wildcard game.

Just think yet another team can clinch their playoff birth in Atlanta.

I'd kind of like to know where we stand sooner than later, since right now, Liriano and Cole are set as our last two starters in the regular season, and if we want one of them to go in the wildcard game or to kickoff the divisional series, it'd be nice to not have something to play for in those games.

Of course, it seems right now that whoever we send out there has gotten the job done lately.

Yeah I agree, the sooner the better. If i checked this correctly the earliest the Pirates can clinch is Tuesday? If they win tomorrow and tuesday, then the Brewers lose on Tuesday it should be over?

Yup, the magic number is three, the sum of Bucs wins and Brewers losses necessary to clinch. So while we haven't clinched mathematically, we've pretty much clinched.

given that all our guys are pitching well, liriano has been the most consistently dominant in the 2nd half.

what would you do:
we will clinch a WC without a doubt in a couple games, but the WC home field advantage is up in the air and probably will be until the last game or 2. (possibly the division lead as well).

obviously you would play every game hard to the last one to win the division, skip the WC game and maybe get a home field adv in the first series.

but in the last game, you still had a chance at home field ad in the WC game, would you pitch liriano or would you save him for the WC game and take your chance with the next guy up to win that last reg game for home field adv.

i would ......

Nice to put the brewers chances at .1 % :D

No way I pitch Liriano and Cole the last 2 games of the year and start Volquez? in the WC game.

The Brewers are toast after leading their division for five months. That has to be one of the biggest chokes in major league history.

They've all been very solid their last couple of starts. I like going with Liriano depending on who they are playing with the southpaw starter and all. I would have no complaints about Cole or even Volquez getting the nod, though. Old Edinson has been the most consistent and durable starter of the rotation for this season, surprisingly enough.

And that win today was a beautiful thing. I was so nervous in that 9th inning I had to go outside and listen to the broadcast while working on my car to keep myself occupied :yahoo:

Great stuff Darkstone!

I was able to go to the game Sunday afternoon with my nephew. The place really was rocking. Also there was a failed attempt at the wave. I don't know if I've ever seen that at a sellout. It was the freaking bottom of the 8th when the guy went for it.

Let's go Bucs!

I stopped the wave at the last home game I went to. Someone tried to start it, and I shouted, "No good can come from the wave!" And either no one actually intended to do it, or those around me heeded my advice, because only about a third of a section participated.

The last road game I went to, however, I tried to start it. :plotting:

That's funny as hell. I might do that at a road game.
