Troy football player Dimitri Miles was arrested and charged with murder Sunday in connection with a shooting death at an off-campus apartment complex in Troy.
Per al.com, the 21-year-old Miles had been a walk-on linebacker for the Trojans, spending his 2013 junior season with the scout team after being declared academically ineligible. He is being held on $100,000 bond.
Miles was immediately dismissed from the Trojan football team and suspended by the school.
"First and foremost, anytime there is a loss of life it is a tragic event and our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim and his family," Troy athletic director John Hartwell said in a statement announcing that Miles' "association with our football team and the Troy Athletic Department has been terminated."
According to Troy police, officers responded to a call from the Trojan Crossing Apartments complex just before 8 a.m. Sunday and found 26-year-old Marquise McClendon suffering from a gunshot wound inside an apartment. He was transported to Troy Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Neighbors told WSFA TV that they had heard several shots being fired.
A Birmingham native, Miles collected 23 tackles and an interception for the Trojans as a defensive back in 2011.
