Breaking NEWS: Bears Hire Ryan Pace as new GM

Dude worked 13 years in the Saints' player personnel department.
Guy's got people league-wide saying good things.
As would most people just hired.

Obviously we won't know for two or three years whether he was a good choice.

The only non positive I have heard was he came from the organization where the head coach had final say on all player personnel, that included the draft. Saints GM is mostly a cap guy.

Now if this points us more to the Shannahan as head coach with final say or if Pace gets the final say is the only question. I guess thats what Ernie is consulting about, maybe he is pushing them to find a head coach that will have personnel say.

I've also heard a lot of guys give unsolicited praise for Pace, 670 the Score had a former bear college scout on talking about the Pace hire, he said, two years ago the NO coach was talking to him about Pace and Sean Payton said back then Pace is pretty amazing and will be a GM some day.

Can someone come up with even one good reason for this hire. Show me how he deserves this. I'll gladly listen to reason. I'm searching and searching for info on this guy and can't wrap my head around the why. Nothing in his past says he deserves to even be near a football team.

I know about as much about him as the rest of us... I don't know shit. We'll hear all the spin, but the truth is we won't know if he is going to be great, terrible or anything in between until he has done the job for a year or two. But if you need a little bit of hope... there is this. Reportedly, Pace had turned down multiple interviews for GM jobs and vowed he wouldn't leave the Saints unless it was a perfect GM opportunity. On its own, that could be just some spin, but Chris Ballard also turned down multiple interviews and a GM offer because the situation wasn't good enough... but our situation was good enough for him to pursue.

This doesn't mean Pace is going to be a great GM. But it does mean that there must be something about the environment that makes this a desirable job. It doesn't have the stench on it that some have claimed. So maybe... maybe... this means that if Pace is competent as a GM, the ceiling here is higher than it would have been elsewhere. That is good. Life is good. Sunshine and butterflies... also good.

Not a knock on pace, I'm not going to trash him until it's apparent that he sucks. However, the following quote somewhat supports what I think is wrong with the bears organization and that it will probably never change.

"As the announcement of the decision was coming out, one member of the NFL hierarchy told CSNChicago.com that Ballard came into his meeting with chairman George McCaskey and Phillips and “told them how he wanted it all to go,” the source said. “Sometimes when you tell people what they need to hear, it’s too much for them.”

Put another way, Ballard, the candidate most familiar with the organization’s functioning, first wanted to establish how operations would go; presumably, exactly whom does he report to, for example. Who controls the money, for example."

I don't know exactly what this means, but part of me thinks Ballard wanted to cut ted Phillips out of the loop and no one was having it. I think that's ridiculous. Either way, I am getting ready for another failure at GM.

Here's an article I found giving some info on Ryan Pace and his accomplishments:

Pace is a native of Flower Mound, Texas, but attended Eastern Illinois University from 1995-1999. Pace was a four-year letterman defensive end and served as team captain as a senior. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in marketing.

Pace joined the Saints in 2001 assisting in the coordination of all operations at training camp and on game days at the Super Dome. He became involved in the scouting department in 2002, serving as a scouting assistant. From 2004-2006, Pace served as a Pro Scout while evaluating veteran free agents, scouting future opponents and evaluating college players for the NFL Draft. Pace helped the Saints navigate through some difficult times in 2005 in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Pace served as the Saints director of pro scouting from 2007-2012 where he had a hand in acquiring the players needed to win the Saints first Super Bowl in franchise history in 2009. Pace was promoted a couple of different times during his tenure with the Saints to keep him in house. His last two years Pace was promoted to director of player personnel, overseeing all personnel moves under GM Mickey Loomis.

In 2008, he was selected by the club to attend the Stanford Business School’s Executive Education NFL-Stanford Program for Managers, an educational program and honor known across the league as an important training ground for promising executives.

Over Pace’s 13 seasons in the New Orleans personnel department (2002-14), the Saints compiled a 115-93 (.553) record. Since 2006, the Saints reached the playoffs five times, won three division titles, played in two NFC Championship games (2006 and 2009) and won the franchise’s first Super Bowl title (Super Bowl XLIV). The Saints pro scouting department helped build a Super Bowl championship club by using all avenues at their disposal: signing free agents QB Drew Brees, FB Heath Evans, LB Scott Fujita, CB Randall Gay, C Jonathan Goodwin, CB Jabari Greer and DE Anthony Hargrove and trading for LB Jonathan Vilma and TE Jeremy Shockey. Pace has also worked to acquire players such as RB Darren Sproles, G Ben Grubbs, NT Brodrick Bunkley, LBs David Hawthorne and Curtis Lofton, while also acquiring S Rafael Bush off waivers. Over the past two seasons the Saints draft classes have included current regular starters LT Terron Armstead (2013, third round), WRs Brandin Cooks (2014, first round) and Kenny Stills (2013, fifth round) and S Kenny Vaccaro (2013, first round).

the way this team played, job security should be earned with a new regime. Now you have Long and a couple DT's, and Fuller. Forte has the excuse they didnt hardly let him run the ball and still got 1000, but looking at attempts, he still pretty much got the 250 or so attempts he got his entire career.

Payton had final say from what I hear so Pace will be doing things on his own for the first time. I just wanted a veteran guy. Same with the coach, I don't know why we have to discover new people every time, for every position. I hope things go well but I'm tired of the mind set.
