I will be new to bow hunting this coming season. My buddy got a new bow and is going to sell me his old bow. I love hunting and I am excited to get into bow hunting.

One of my questions is what type of arrow shaft do you guys prefer? Aluminum or Carbon? I have been reading up on some of the differences and the carbon seems much more durable but do you guys have any issues with penetration or weighting? The bow is a 60lb draw.

Carbon. Lighter and faster.

I shot a doe last season at 35 yds with bow set at 65 pounds and it went right through both lungs.

Carbon all of the way.

Shoots much faster and flatter than anything else on the market

Ok, next question. 2 or 3 blade broadheads? I'm thinking mechanical for the better flight.

Thx a good friend recommended them to me and he set up some kinda gel thing and tested the impact damage.

He is kinda a freak about stuff. He showed me the results of his tests and that was good enough for me. He said they do like 28% more damage then 10 or 12 different broad heads on the market.

I agree with his study cause that doe I mentioned earlier dropped like 20 yds from where I shot her and was dead in about a minute at most.

Do you have any issues with flight or drop using fixed heads?

Not anymore. They all weigh 100 grains or 125 which ever you choose. I can take any broad head and at 30 yds put it in the kill zone.

Back when you used heavier arrows and lighter bows this was a issue. Most Bow's now shoot well over 300 fps and with carbon arrows you will not find that big a difference.

With the fixed, do you practice with field tips or the broadheads and just sharpen afterwards? Some of what I have been reading is that the flight of the fixed heads is different than the field tips so adjustments need to be made. I am just starting out so I don't want to over complicate things too early.

I shoot 100 grain field tips and 100 grain broadheads. I see no difference in the least bit. Like I said todays bows are so much more powerful.

I do fire a few into a 3D target before I hit the woods to make sure all is ok.
