I'm watching the NIT Championship game and Bobby say's this is his last game. That bums me out. Good luck to Bob in his final retirement. He's at the top with John Wooden, Rupp, and Dean Smith. I hated Bob when I was a kid. Being a Wolverine fan I think most would understand why I didn't like Knight. My dad told me to watch Bob coach and then I would understand. I took his advice and now I know why he is one of the greatest college basketball coaches ever. The coaches these days still don't compare to Bob Knight in my book. Bet of luck to

The last time Bob Knight made the Elite Eight, Frank Kaminsky hadn't been born yet. Can we stop pretending he's a top five coach in history? Hell, he'd be the fifth best coach in this year's Final Four.

Bob won 3 National Titles during his time at Indiana... however, he's an ass hole who is and has been far removed from reality and I for one couldn't be happier that he's out of the picture at ESPN. That dude needs to seriously just go away and enjoy the few years he has left.

Coach K is a legend, and I think almost all would put him above Knight. Izzo and Cal I can see the argument for even though combined they don't have as many natty Champs as Knight does by himself (yet).

But Bo Ryan? Come on. And this is no slight on him, but like him or not, you gotta give Bobby Knight his due.

Although I don't hide my distaste for Bobby, I do respect his impact and history in the game. It's hard for me to compare any coach who has yet to win a National Title to Knight. So, while no dis-respect to Bo, It's difficult at best to place him above Knight.

Bo Ryan has more national championships than Bob Knight. And while one obviously has to discount them because they are D3, Knight's first two titles also have to be somewhat discounted because they were before college basketball was big-time. He won his big recruits before cable and before the Magic-Bird explosion.

Let's compare three hypothetical coaches:
A: 356-124, 172-64 (Conf.), 24 NCAA Tourney Wins, 2 Final Fours
B: 282-158, 135-97 (Conf.), 7 NCAA Tourney Wins, 0 Final Fours
C: 346-145, 161-79 (Conf.), 30 NCAA Tourney Wins, 4 Final Fours

As I'm sure you surmised, A is Bo Ryan's 14 Wisconsin years. B is Bob Knight's last 14 years. C is Tom Izzo's 14 years. I think it makes it pretty clear. Knight accomplished a lot in the olden days. When thrust into modern times, he just wasn't that good. The four coaches in the Final Four are.

How about giving us Knights first 14 years instead of cherry picking his last 14.

First of all... no, you cannot discount Knight's first two National Titles. I hate that argument about "it only counts if they won after X". This argument typically only comes from programs who A) have never won a National Title or B) has a coach at a program who has never won a National Title.

It's not cherry-picking. Basketball just wasn't that big in the 1970s outside of a few locales. Most games weren't televised. The NBA Finals in 1981 drew ratings that were 1/3 what they drew in 1996, despite network TV's ratings going down substantially. In 1976, only 2 teams drew more than 14,000 per game. Now it's 21.

It was an easier time to win championships. I don't know it is that hard to understand. I certainly am not going to argue Doc Meanwell was better than, say, Izzo, even though he won 3 titles. I also think Coach K has just as much stake to the claim of "greatest coach ever" as Wooden does.

Knight took over one of the few serious programs at the time in the heart of a basketball state. He still did a good job- his predecessor did virtually nothing- but they had won two titles before. His titles are good, but once basketball got widespread TV coverage and the game changed, he wasn't that good. The fact that he had 1 Final Four in 21 years at the end of his career has to mean something, no?

Too funny. Wisconsin has an NCAA title and three consensus pre-tourney titles. Bo Ryan has four NCAA titles.
So which one am I in, A or B? I'm confused.
