as assistant GM

St. Louis Blues President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Doug Armstrong announced Wednesday the club has named Martin Brodeur as the team's Assistant General Manager.

The Blues and Brodeur have agreed on a three-year contract.

Brodeur, 43, originally joined the Blues as a free agent on Dec. 2, 2014. After a seven-game stint with the club in which he posted a 3-3-0 record, Brodeur announced his retirement from the NHL on Jan. 29 and moved into the Blues’ front office as a Senior Advisor to the General Manager.

There's something about the St. Louis area that is very attractive for former players to put up roots...

What is St. Louis' fascination with Marty? I get signing him, maybe he pans out, you sell some extra tickets but to give him a front office gig with no experience whatsoever?

Is assistant GM equivalent to the assistant to the regional manager? Do they actually do anything or just kind of hang out and watch the GM?
They might plan employee luncheons and golf tournaments or something. Arrange rental cars on scouting trips?

Yzerman was Assistant GM to Ken Holland before he took the Tampa job. Worked out pretty well for The Captain. ...but then again, that was The Captain!

This is how you build the experience, mon frere.

Sure, but I would think you'd start someone at a position lower on the totem pole than Assistant GM if they had absolutely zero experience other than playing experience and were looking to learn the ropes. I know Shanny hadn't worked for a team before either, but he'd at least held a job in hockey that required a suit rather than pads.

Then again, at least he didn't demand/expect to start at the top like Messier.

He must've found in-laws that live in the St. Louis area.

I was thinking maybe it was the babysitting?

Maybe Marty's shown some good acumen in his few months in the front office.

I suppose that's possible, but I still think "old boy's club" BS probably played a huge part, don't you? It's not like there aren't guys out there who have shown "good acumen" while also working for organizations and gaining experience over many years.

Well, Brett Hull has a front office spot in STL, right? Pretty self-explanatory right there lol
