16 will make the chase. After 3 races, 4 will be eliminated, leaving 12. After 3 more races, 4 more will be eliminated, leaving 8. After 3 more races, 4 more will be eliminated, leaving 4. For the final race at Homestead, the final 4 drivers will have their points reset, and the driver who earns the most points in the final race will be the champion.

To gain entry into the chase, a driver simply has to win a race throughout the year. If more than 16 different winners, than tie will be broken by points. If less than 16 different winners, points will be used to gain access into the chase.

why not just do away with championships altogether. This would pretty much make them meaningless.

Brian France is grasping at anything to hang on to what is left of the racing fan base. If going to the Chasse format in the first place wasn't "jumping the shark," this certainly qualifies.

I personally like the chase, but this new format is just stupid. If anything, the final reset should be the final 4 who has accumulated the most wins throughout the year.

I'm okay with the notion of eliminating Chase contenders after 3/6/9 races.

I'm not okay with the idea that someone could suck wind for all but one race - which he/she somehow wins - and keep someone else who had a solid season of top 10/top 5 results, but no wins, out of the Chase in the first place.

The odds of there being 16 different winners in 26 races is slim to none, so your scenario is most likely a longshot.

Are the points reset after each elimination round? If so, that's stupid. If not, it's actually pretty arbitrary because under the current format, if you're on the bottom after 3 races the chances of you winning the championship are less than 1 percent anyway. You'd basically have to win the last 7 races. So really these "eliminations" happen already, but now they can hype it and sell it to advertisers.

The last race thing is a hot piece of shit though. A driver could dominate a season (say 8 wins or more), lead the entire Chase, and really be hands down the class of the field. But in the final race the points are all equal and he loses the championship by something simple, say gets caught a lap down when the caution comes out when he's on pit road, and he ends up finishing 15th. That would be utterly ridiculous and the fact that situation is even plausible shows what little thought went into this (or that they just don't care about fairness in racing)

The changes are for one thing only, money. They're appeasing to TV partners and sponsors because by manufacturing drama with gimmicks, they can sell it easier. Those "elimination rounds" will draw a nice price for advertisers and sponsors.

Question for you hardcore Nascar fans. Who must approve this? You know how in other sports there is a union that must approve rule changes?

I really didn't mind the chase thing. It rewarded consistency of the season but this elimination thing is dumb. Resetting the points for 4 guys for the last race is a joke. I really hope they do not go through with that part. I'd even be ok with them resetting the points after the race 3 and 6 eliminations but not just for 1 race.

Ill still watch the races and go to a few when I can but change is not always good and I am not only talking about NASCAR, back in the day I would watch racing exclusively not so much now. This new format will hurt Dale Jr. for sure he is usually top 10 or so but doesent win that often, other drivers will win a race but not have that great of a year and make the chase fans will complain and they will change the format again it never ends.

Well its official now. And its official that once the Chase starts, I'm watching nothing but football on Sundays. In related news, my remote is happy that it no longer has to flip channels every 5 minutes

I haven't watched much the past couple years but this new format is a complete joke. I'm with you, it definitely makes it easier for me to decide what to watch on Sundays. And when football isn't on, I'll see if there's a baseball game on.
