saw a thread like this on the main board, seems interesting to do for hockey.
however.... don't just give me a player name for either. put a little thought into it.

Canucks - the good: depth. two very strong scoring lines (88 goals from 1st line, 85 goals from 2nd line); too many d-men under contact, not a bad problem to have. lotsa guys battling for bottom 6 ice time, and not a really debilitating contract among the entire roster.

Canucks - the bad: inconsistency. has plagued this team for years. whether it's goaltending, or a penalty kill that almost costs us a series (1st round), or just the whole team not showing up (2nd round). They can be world beaters when they are on, but three different times lost to the worst team in the league last season. very frustrating.

Sabres - the good: Drafting. The organization has always been very good at scouting and drafting players that transition well into the system they have setup in Buffalo.

Sabres - the bad: Commitment. While the Sabres are good at drafting, they refuse to get players that aren't from within. Making trades or going after top players in free agency is very rare, and they refuse to give out long term contracts that turn away a lot of players.

Sabres - the ugly:

The Good - Roberto Luongo

The Bad - Roberto Luongo

Roberto Luongo has had some tremendous regular seasons with the Canucks. He had a career year in shutouts one year. Smashed the Canucks shutout record with 9 in another. He made highlight reel save after save this year and was stellar in the first round of the playoffs against St Louis and was Average against the Kings. Then it all fell apart against Chicago. Eliminated in 6 games both years, the goalie who became our captain who was to be our saviour went right back to square one in his playoff career. He is back to having to prove himself as a big game goalie and a playoff performer.

Season Rating A+. Playoff Rating C-.

Penguins:

The good - Depth at center and defense. The team is built inside-out, which is very good for sustained success.

The bad - Depth on the farm. All that sustainability from good center and defense depth is partially negated by the weakness of the Penguin farm system. There's not much down there in the way of impact prospects, just a few guys who project as serviceable to good NHL players. Tangradi, Connor, Jeffrey and Letestu are the only forwards I can see in our system projecting as full-time NHL players, Engelland's nothing more than defensive depth, and Grant's the only other defenseman who will likely see significant NHL time. Tangradi and Grant are also the only two impact prospects I see in the system. And Despres.

I really enjoy the team leadership. They speak (or act) and everybody conducts themselves accordingly. Other attributes fall into place because of it. Pride, loyalty, determination, etc... Mike Babcock is also a great leader because, like Scotty, he will fade into the backround and let those guys have their say in a lot of things.

Nothing too bad sticks out in my head. Maybe not having the Leafs in the division?

Flames (this is an easy one)

Good - Defense and goaltending (Solid defence corps, Kipper is one of the best of the league at his position)

Bad - Offense (Iggy plus a bunch of scrubs)

Ugly - Have you seen a picture of Darryl Sutter lately?

seriously though, Howard needs to progress and not regress.
Since that is unknown, that is certainly a negative for the wings.
Can Ozzy still step it up? Didn't seem like it last year.
They do have Larsson and McCollum in the farm system and they are question marks themselves.

For the Devils: The good is their ability to lose players to free agency and continue to plug in new players without batting an eye.

The bad is I don't know if there is total unity/a true stand out leader on the team. They have the talent but sometimes I wonder where their heads are at. The addition of Arnott should help that.

very good assessment.....

as far as the team goes now, not the org as a whole.... its tough. i'd have to say

the good: forward depth. yes, i said it, forward depth. for the devils. that is correct.you can look and shake your head all you want but most teams wish they had a group like parise zajac langenbrunner arnott elias zubrus hell even rolston (as much as a let down as he's been) and now presumably kovy. having tedenby, josefson and henrique ready to get their shot doesn't exactly hurt either.

the bad: i would say defensive depth but that has seemingly been adressed.... i would say center depth but that has DEFINATELY been adressed. i'm gonna have to side with nasty as i don't think langs is a true captian. he' be a good assistant but not the main man. he is definately a player who at times needs to be kept in check with his occasional temper tantrum.

Habs -
Good - speedy skilled forwards, with Markov a good power play, young talent coming up (supposedly)

Bad - 2/3rds of defense is inconsistent at times, goaltending often hot or cold, the stupid mindset of some fans wanting Quebec born players instead of the best players lingers on, though I think its much better than it was 10 years ago

For the Islanders the good: YOUTH. Most of the roster will be under 25. More kids are on the way as well.

the bad: LACK OF DEPTH. If Roloson goes down the Isles are in big trouble. Dipietro can't be counted on. I really don't know how good Nathan Lawson is yet. When Rob Schremp is in your teams top 6 forwards the team could be in trouble.

On defense Mark Streit & Mark Eaton will be solid. However if Bruno Gervais is gets serious ice time the other team is going to score a lot of goals.

For the Wings...

Good: Year out consistency. They lost a step last year, but there is very little turn over, and every year you know they have a legitimate shot at the Cup.

Bad: It's nearly impossible to land a 19 year old stud when you never draft above 20th, so I get a little envious watching guys like Kane, Stamkos, and Doughty run amok throughout the league.

hmmmm...

Good: I like a lot about the upcoming team...good centers, much more solid D corps (on paper at least), leadership and experience continues to grow, addition by subtraction in the coaching staff (see Yeo later...NOT), new building, new faces...i'm pumped

Bad: wingers are still weak, farm system is lacking in a big name/star, just a bunch of above average AHLers with little promise, and the fact that they moved the start time to 7pm meaning i'll miss every 1st period through the fall...as if watching online didn't suck enough.
