On The Waterfront not getting more votes is disappointing. So you guys haven't seen it or just didn't like it that much ? I know we're not supposed to editorialize here... so apologies for that.

Just not a fan of old movies. They are more theatre than movie. Good back then, but I really can't think of any I can watch admirably now (Wizard of Oz, but that was a kind of it's own).

Like the two Cape Fears. The first one is laughable if you watch it now, but was probably scary as hell back then. DeNiro and Nolte absolutely destroyed it in the newer one, and it was actually good ...and scary.

I agree that older movies BASICALLY dont hold up, unless you watched them early and established your awe of them before seeing modern movies.

I LOVE Ben Hur, but that is more because I saw it as a kid and loved the epic size of the movie. It was an event just to watch it. Today, it just doesnt hold up. The acting is horrible (a trend is Heston movie, IMHO), but that is actually the case in most older movies (I saw The Robe for the first time about a year or so ago, and we were all laughing at the HORRIBLE acting, then realized that he won Best Lead Actor that year!!)

Since we're editorializing ;) I was going to say the same thing about On The Beach that I know has absolutely no traction (so there's little guilt). A really great film about the end of the world intelligently done.

I think some films like Ben Hur still hold up. It's still a good story and the chariot race is still awesome.

Even though cgi is great you can still tell the difference. The guy doing the new Star War movie Abrams likes real sets and actors when he can and I bet it will be a better movie because of it.
