The Pittsburgh Pirates today, agreed to terms with 2012 Supplemental 1st Rd. Pk. Barrett Barnes ( 45th Overall ) The Texas Tech OF, signed for 1M.

Saving the Pirates 136k under slot. (Per, Pittsburgh Tribune Review Pirates Beat writer Rob Biertempfel. )

Great news and a pretty good deal for the Bucs, IMO.

This was my "best case scenario" for this signing. Good work by the front office to get this done quickly and under slot.

Agreed. That means the money available for Appel is $2.9 slot, plus $328K (5% over total allocation), plus $136K from signing Barnes for that much under slot..... bringing the total to $3.364.

I haven't seen any numbers on any of the other signings, except for Mathisen (2nd round) who reportedly signed exactly at slot..... and of course there is no guarantee that the Bucs will offer ALL available dollars to Appel. They might have some guys after round 10 whom they'd like to offer more than $100K.

Does anyone know of a site which routinely lists the signing bonuses for the Pirates' other signed draftees?

Pirates Prospects.com may provide you with the numbers you're looking for Mags. They have a Pirates Draft Pk Signings Tracker & they may provide you with the bonus numbers you're seeking on all of the deals?

Not certain, but I hope that helps.

Jim Callis last night said we could offer Appel $3.7 million right now, but would not be able to sign Walker Buehler, he doesn't see Buehler signing for less than $1 million. So I asked him if it was possibly to sign Buehler without Appel, and he said yes, but then later said the most we could offer Buehler without Appel, was just over $700K. However if we can sign Appel, we can actually offer Buehler $900K, weird stuff.
I am holding out that we can sign both, but if for some reason Appel doesn't sign, I don't think we will get Buehler either. I don't think this is what Bud wanted with this new CBA, and I think we will go from the Pirates exploiting the syatem, to the Pirates getting completely hosed by the system. We should have taken Giolito, and he would probably already be signed, plus has a higher upside, lower floor, but higher upside.
mags, baseball america has the same thing as P2, but has it for every team.

I see Callis's number on a current offer for Appel, based on the estimated bonuses at Tim's Pirates Prospects web site. Apparently, Callis added Appel's slot ($2.9 mill), plus a 5% overrun ($328K) of the Pirates' overall allocation, plus the total made available from signing guys under slot so far ($483K).

I think I also see his numbers for offers to Buehler, as follows:

- Maximum bonus allowed for players drafted after round 10 (e.g. Buehler) is $100K.

- Both Tim's site and Baseball America indicate that the team is $483K under their total slot allocation for the guys signed so far. If they choose to offer it all to Buehler, that would bring his maximum potential offer up to $583K.

- The Pirates' total draft allocation is $6.56 million. A team can go 5% over that without forfeiting future draft picks. 5% of $6.56 mill is $328K. If they offer all of THAT to Buehler as well, that would bring his total offer to $911K.

- However, if the Pirates fail to sign Appel, they LOSE his $2.9 million slot money from their total allocation, dropping that allocation from $6.56 mill down to $3.66 mill. That drops their 5% "overrun" number from $328K to $183K..... reducing the maximum offer for Buehler to $100K + $483K + $183K = $766K.

The obvious kicker in this whole thing is that the Pirates can't offer the "extra" money to both Appel and Buehler, but must divide it between them..... and anyone else they sign over slot. We also need to keep in mind that, although the "slot" allowance for any player signed after round 10 is $100K max, the team gets no additional allowance if they sign any of those guys for less than $100K or don't sign them at all.

Since the Pirates total slot allowance comes from adding the slot numbers for all 11 guys drafted in the first 10 rounds..... and if I believe the data at the Pirates Prospects web site..... I'm gratified that the Pirates have "signed" 7 of those guys already. (Tim's information frequently "jumps the gun" in that he lists guys as "signed" after they've agreed to terms, but before they've taken their physicals and actually signed their contracts. The Pirates' site at MLB.com lists a draftee as "signed" only after he actually signs a contract.)

At any rate, my primary interest remains on the unsigned guys from the top 10 rounds (Appel - round 1, Thomas - round 4, Samson - round 5, and Ross - round 8), since those are the guys who have a potential impact on "extra" money the Pirates can use to sign the current draft class without forfeiting future draft picks.

By the way, thanks for that tip about Baseball America. I was able to find their draft listing for the Pirates. Unfortunately, they don't show actual signing bonuses..... just slot numbers. However, they DO show a total for bonuses given to players who have signed, and that agrees with the information at PiratesProspects.com.
