My fault, someone on 106.7 mentioned Shanahan had history with Mays.

Regardless, he signed elsewhere. Which is fine. He's a depth player. I'd prefer the one year stop gap option with Barnett being the higher end player for this year. Next year Robinson is back as depth and the address the position long term.

My problem with Barnett is that we go into next season not needing one, but two ILBs because with Robinson ending last year on IR, and starting this year on IR.. I have NO faith that he will be able to stay healthy. Barnett is a last resort depth player likely on a one year deal IF we sign him. If he were that good, I think the Bills would have found a way to keep him. And at 32.... I would have preferred we stay away.

We would need 2 with that logic regardless. Any player signed this time of year isn't going to be ideal enough to be considered as part of any long term plan. You either find old veterans, or wing and a prayer young players who haven't done anything. When thin, at ilb, and being a playoff team... Give me the proven talent. Worry about next year next year. Moves made this time of year will be made for this year out of need. Moves for long term don't exist in August.

Again who said long term. Mays at 28 has a longer shelf life than Barnett at 32. Put Mays behind LFB and let him learn and at worse we come out with a depth ILB next year. Put Barnett there, and we go into next season needing a starter and a backup.

I totally agree. I just happen to think Barnett is plan B. If we sign him great. But I dont expect him to be more that a one year guy. And long term i dont think he helps us any. Would have preferred Mays on that basis.

Shark, you said long term. You keep mentioning beyond this year. All I care about with players signed right now is how they can help this year.

Agreed. Can't expect anyone we sign now to be part of our future plans, especially as against the cap as we are. It's almost August, no more long term signings to be made.

That kind of thinking is a bit off. If you can get a guy who realistically can be around for 2-3 years, then a one year stop gap is just spinning your wheels. Again I will say, there is a reason they went after Mays first. Barrett is the fall back plan. Now Im not saying i dont want us to sign him at this point, but I would have preferred the younger player. You have got to think past just this year when signing guys to the roster during camp. And that is why they went after Mays first despite Barrett being the better player for this coming season.

It's off to think players signed this time of year are anything other than a one year flyer, whether they are young or old. Any player available this late is going to have issues. Whether it be lack of talent or ability or age, or just being old. Give me the old guy who can perform and start short term if need be, rather than a 28 year old guy who has been in the league 5 years and proven nothing.

Great thinking. But it still wouldn't explain why the team wanted Mays over Barnett now would it??

You'd have to ask whoever scheduled the visits. They may have liked Mays more because he's younger and potentially cheaper, maybe they didn't feel they had a chance or the money for a better veteran player.

Thats illogical dude. The amount of money we have didnt change from when Mays visited until last week. You go after players in order of who you would sign. You dont bring in the "lesser" talent first. You bring in the guy you actually want, then if that doesnt work, you go to your fall back plans.

When you are cap strapped you work under a different logic. Money dictates who you can and can't sign. That's the reality of this cap penalty and only having a little bit more than a million to spend.

Have to disagree. IF you only had $20k walking into the car dealership. Would you walk in and say give me that used Hyundai in the corner, or would you make a bid on the New one first and have the used one (the lesser vehicle) as your fall back. MOney might dictate who you can or cant sign, but when you are on a set budget, you dont go after the fall back plan first. The team made Mays an offer, he turned it down. Barnett was the fall back plan.

:agree: barnett wasnt the 1st option nor should he be . we talked to mays 1st because we thought he was the best fit for the money . it turned out mays took more cash from the texans .

If you don't think a team that is cap strapped would prioritize free agents with cost in mind, then we will just have to disagree and leave it.

Why the heck are we debating this anyways? Barnett or any other ILB we bring in are simply back ups who will see limited action and are one year rentals anyways. Mays didn't want to be here obviously and looked at himself as a starter so, not a fit. With Barnett's experience, I feel comfortable with him as a back up for one season and also hope one of the youngsters step up in camp once the pads go on.

Umm.. cause we like to argue?? :)

Also totally agree who ever we bring in is simply a backup. I was good with Mays. Im ok with Barnett as well. I just think Mays would have been a better option because he has a longer shelf life.
