My first visit to Banff, July, 2022. Breathtaking scenery in the Canadian Rockies. Weather was variable so I had to be patient and wait for clouds to pass over.

Peyto Lake. Glacier sediment give the lake its blue tint.


Sunrise at Lake Louise. Arrived at 6 AM to catch a parking space and lucked out with this scene.

Chateau Lake Louise. Good place to relax and catch a buzz.

I can't remember if it's Banff or Jasper, I think Jasper but not sold, but it's very expensive.

A dive hotel was $2?? a night.

Honestly head towards Edmonton. It's quite nice

Will check out Jasper next time up here. I camped out in my explorer and skipped the cheap hotels. That offset the crazy gas prices.

This guy (Hans Kilian) was the driver of Germany's 1932 Olympic bronze medal 4-man bobsled team... my paternal Grandpa met him for drinks in Lake Placid... they hit it off and stayed in contact until WW2... Kilian was a hotelier in the Bavarian town(s) of Garmisch-Partenkirchen... he owned the Park Hotel Alpenhof, whose lavish trophy room was loaded with a champion bobsledding career's hoard of medals, cups and crystal.

Towards the end of the war, Grandpa H2S (working for a Pittsburgh Steel Corp) received a phone call from Kilian -how the connection was approved and made was never explained- frantically asking for any help possible to keep advancing GIs from ransacking/looting his town, his hotel, his trophy room.

The hotel ended up bunking several hundreds of U.S. soldiers without the loss of a single silver fork. Made quite an impression on the Germans, especially Hans Kilian, who credited my grandpa.

Grandpa did well in the steel business during the war, retired well at 58 yrs old... I grew up learning geography by keeping to his travel itineraries... he took the H2S family to Garmisch for Christmas/New Years in 1961, 1962 and 1967.

picture is one of several hundred culled from a large cache of inherited slides (6,000 est) Grandpa took with his Leica.

btw... your pictures are magnificent (helps, doesn't it, knowing that wherever you point the terrain is jaw-droppingly beautiful.)
