Aaron Sele again?

Questions about his physical and O's withdrew their 4 year offer.

Over the next 4 seasons, Sele pitched 708 innings (over 200 innings in 2 seasons) with a 47-35 record.

Maybe we should cancel our contract with whoever is reviewing players' physicals.

Grant Balfour Could File Grievance Against Orioles

By Steve Adams [December 20, 2013 at 5:02pm CST]
5:02pm: Balfour will discuss a grievance with the players' union, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports ([ame="[MEDIA=twitter]414166164609466368[/MEDIA]"]on Twitter[/ame]). In a full column, Rosenthal reports that he spoke with two doctors who know Balfour well, both of whom say he is 100 percent fine. Rays team physician Koco Eaton was surprised that the deal wasn't completed. Eaton examined Balfour today and said it should have been "a no-brainer" for the Orioles to complete the contract, adding that Balfour's shoulder MRI today looked identical to the one he saw three years ago.
Rosenthal also spoke with Reds physician Timothy Kremcheck, who performed elbow and shoulder surgery on Balfour in the past. Said Kremcheck: "For a guy in his 30s who has pitched six or seven years since his rotator-cuff repair, his MRI on his shoulder looks remarkably good."
Balfour's agent, Seth Levinson, released a statement on the issue, stating plainly that "The only reasonable conclusion is that Grant is healthy and the Orioles at the last moment changed their minds." Levinson's full statement can be seen on Twitter, via ESPN's Jerry Crasnick.
4:13pm: Balfour spoke with Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle and told her that he is baffled that the Orioles backed off because he is "100 percent fine." He went on to tell Slusser that his MRIs -- including the MRI taken of his right shoulder -- look exactly the same as they did three years ago. Slusser quotes Balfour:
"I'm the All-Star pitcher I was last season. My shoulder is fine, everything is fine. I'm ready to come out there in the ninth inning, do what I do."
Balfour told Slusser that he isn't looking to bad-mouth anyone and made no negative comments about the Orioles. Slusser notes that a team stepping away from Balfour due to medical concerns could cost him millions of dollars ([ame="[MEDIA=twitter]414154096635957248[/MEDIA]"]All[/ame] [ame="[MEDIA=twitter]414154451578929152[/MEDIA]"]links[/ame] [ame="[MEDIA=twitter]414154840692899840[/MEDIA]"]to[/ame] [ame="[MEDIA=twitter]414155114861969409[/MEDIA]"]Slusser's[/ame] [ame="[MEDIA=twitter]414155485428711424[/MEDIA]"]Twitter[/ame]).

In all fairness, Sele wasn't really good during those 4 years....he had a season where he pitched well, and in the other 3, his ERA was 4.50+ with high WHIPs. He benefited from good run support given that the M's in 2000-2001 were a good offensive team, and so were the 2002 Angels

Isn't about how good Sele was. He proved to be healthy when the O's said he wasn't.

Which is worse:

- you offer a contract but renege because of the physical

- you offer a contract but renege because you don't think he will be as good as the contract you offered

Always been a problem under Angelos...inept medical staff.

And as a long time O's fan, I hope this is not a sign of more Angelos meddling.

This ain't good, not just with respect to Balfour, but also with respect to how other players out there might view this organization.

Hope our farm system continues to get better as the years go by. Unless the table is "already set", I'm finding it harder and harder to see why a free agent would want to come here unless we totally overpay for them.

Good question...

Why Would Anybody Want to Work for Peter Angelos?

Frank Wren (former O's GM and current Braves GM)...

“That’s how Peter plays general manager. He uses medical reasons to kill or change a deal if he doesn’t like it.”

Same old Angelos.

Here's something I didn't realize...

Balfour’s would-be two-year $15 million deal would have been the club’s most expensive [free agent] contract in Dan Duquette’s short tenure. Instead, that dubious honor belongs to Wei-Yin Chen, who signed a three-year, $11.4 million deal to come to the states prior to the 2012 season.

Wish there was some examination we could give Angelos, and we could raise concerns and cancel his pathetic reign as owner.
