It's been mentioned on other threads that the Lions picked the worst time to suck badly (the years leading up to the new CBA). That's about half right. The other half is, they drafted three enviable players in Johnson, Suh and Stafford. The team is in cap hell not only because of when these guys came into the league, being top draft picks, but also because they're good and the Lions wanted to keep them.

Not many people have much angst letting go of some other players from that period. The best example is Pettigrew, who had plenty of potential but just hasn't lived up to that first round expectations. If the Lions do not keep him, there probably won't be too many calling for management being fired.

Maybe it's time to let go of the past and move into the future. Trade Johnson, Suh and Stafford this year - clean house - take the cap hits - and reload with three lower cost first round alternatives. Say to the guys who remain on the team that for the players traded "Thier timing sucked. Keeping them would have cost you potential money in the future. We need to be fiscally responsible for all of us to succeed."

Crazy talk? Trade arguably the three best picks from the past ten years of Lions drafting? Maybe, but this year does hold a lot of promise.

The top QB porspects aren't that far off of what Stafford has shown, exciting but needing to develop. It's a deep WR class, and for as much as I like a great WR, it's more who is throwing than who is catching that makes a difference on Offense. As to replacing Suh, there isn't another tackle like him, but there is a DE prospect that looks to be the same caliber of special.

Stafford to Houston for the #1 pick. Calvin to Rams for the #2 pick. Suh to Oakland for the #5 pick. Won't even try to paint the other compensatory picks the Lions would need to be given for three proven commodities.

The point is, this team's past as a loser while picking early first round winners is causing a stranglehold. If unloading the past with its high costs is what needs to be done, then let's do it this year, when the crop of incoming talent seems to have decent potential. Yeah, I know, a capologist will point out that it won't work, that the dead money will all come due now or something along those lines - but if the numbers DO work, then the team at least needs to see if other parties are willing.

Same old Lions isn't cutting it.

You do realize that after rookie contracts come due. You are in same position trying to keep the next set of superstars...

Let me guess, just do it again in 4 years??
