Comparing The Top Artists, Past And Present, By Vocal Range

Concert Hotels put together an interactive chart examining the recorded vocal ranges of the world's greatest, and most popular, singers. Plotting the octaves successfully captured in the studio, the chart demonstrates just how far across the keyboard their pipes have spanned, listing the songs in which each vocalist has hit their lowest and highest notes.

At the top of the chart: Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose, closely followed by Mariah Carey, Prince, Steven Tyler and James Brown. At the very bottom: country singer Luke Bryan, who is just topped by Taylor Swift, Karen Carpenter, Sam Cooke and Justin Bieber.

So much for the value of "vocal range". Can we really call Steven Tyler and Axl Rose at their high end singing ?

I love GNR but Axl had no range. It was horrible to awful. Civil War and Knocking On Heavens Door were the songs where he showed any range. I guess.

Johnny Cash on Folsome Prison Blues has more vocal range than Steven Tyler. :L

Depends on how your defining range.

Axl had decent range and could belt a good high when needed, but a lot of it was using nasal techniques to change the character of his voice. He was good with that.

If your talking purely highs to lows projecting it primarily with your mouth and vocal chords, there a thousands of singers who were better than him with range.

In his prime, Geoff Tate of Queensryche and many other metal singers had "Operatic" range chops to their vocals that Axl couldn't remotely touch.

When Steven Tyler is near the top of the list about singing voices and Sam Cooke is near the bottom that's all I need to know about it.

Being able to shriek out a note by straining your falsetto to the max does not indicate "range" in a meaningful way, imo.

Being able to maintain a note without sacrificing timbre or tone quality is more important than simply being able to reach a higher note.

And seriously, Justin Bieber?

What are they including music wise? I am not into her music... but Julie Andrews is well know to be one of the few people in the world who can range all 8 octaves... and it is a bonus that she actually sounds good at all 8.

I think they're just including notes hit. Rose is a natural baritone, and I've always liked his natural range a lot.

Most of his falsetto just sounds like an elongated cat meow to me, though.

It's crazy how high he can go, though.
