I don’t hate the move, but I don’t really see the point. Is he really an upgrade over Gorkys?

With the bat he certainly is a better player.

He's not going to hit what he did last year, but he should pretty easily out-hit Gorkys. Defense wise it's probably a wash. (edit: I mean it's a wash with Gorkys. He's 100% an upgrade over Span)

This also keeps the door open for Duggar. Jackson crushed left-handed pitching last year, 1.013 OPS last season. If the Giants want to go that route they can.

Would I have rather seen the Giants spend that on some pitching? Perhaps, but Jackson is an upgrade over Gorkys I'm fairly confident.

Yes, yes he is.
Sure, if we get 2017 Jackson. But 2017 was his career year.

Again, I don’t hate the move. At worst, it SHOULD close the door on any Cain rumors, and that alone makes this a good signing. I just don’t see this as much if any upgrade over Gorkys.

Lets compare the two:
2017:
Hernandez - .255/.327/.326
Jackson - .318/.387/.482
2018 BBRef projection:
Hernandez - .251/.321/.372
Jackson - .276/.337/.422
2017 dWar
Hernandez - -0.7 (113 games, 50 in center. Interestingly, he graded out barely above average in range factor)
Jackson - -0.3 (81 games, 38 in center. He graded out at about average to barely above in range factor)

Hernandez is 30 year old, Jackson will turn 31 on the 1st. Essentially, this is a wash move. I was okay with it, mainly because I knew the FO was focused on bringing in someone to play center. I would have preferred a one year deal, but 2 isn't that bad. I think the FO hopes that Jackson hits more like he did early in career, based on his 2017 season. But really, the signing is a PR move. "Look, we got our veteran gamer that can shore up center field for us!" You cannot say enough about the value of veteran presence.

I do wonder if Hernandez' roster spot is not as secure. What if Slater outhits him in spring training and Parker looks like a keeper? Does Hernandez get the boot or does Slater still get the option to Sacramento?

It sounds like Jackson is not necessarily going to be the everyday center fielder. Maybe Duggar does have a shot.

I keep forgetting about Slater. He played real well before he got hurt last year. But Parker has the power potential, so you gotta think the org will do anything they can to get him to play. But if he doesn’t deliver, at least a bit, in the first couple months of 18, he is gone. Too much MLB-ready talent in Sacto to sit with him for too long.

Slater
Shaw
Duggar
Williamson

Interesting
If the Giants still want to pick up a center fielder, than the Jackson signing makes absolutely no sense. Why would the Giants need a 4th outfielder when they already have plenty? I have to think that Hernandez is gone if the Giants pick up another center fielder.

They still haven’t announced the corosponding 40 move. I think either Gorkys is gone, or a trade is in the works.

We still have Roberto Gomez on the 40, BTW...

I was reading the comments on the Jackson signing article over at the team's website and saw a couple posters who sounded an awful lot like ol' Tito.
10 years later and the guy is still using that schtick? That’s impressive dedication.

I wanted to copy and paste it here for confirmation but it is gone. It had all the earmarks of a Tito post - talking about some weird Big Diap (maybe the FO? Not sure), Ajax and toilet bowl cleaning. It was weird, it was rambling and it didn't make a whole lot of sense. The only thing missing was calling for Vel-EZ to play more.

Or praising Sanchez???? :D

Is bullpen building such an inexact science that it's all hit or miss? It was apparent from the last 8 years that a good 'pen is necessary to be competitive, so it the FO making strides in that area?

I need to get some tix for ST. I would think tickets wouldn't be as hot a commodity as they were back in the day.
