It's hard to complain about too many football games, but it's also hard to understand why we reward .500 teams with an extra bowl game.

So, instead, I just choose to watch games that interest me, and leave the rest alone until we get to the 'big' ones to which I usually watch them all.
but thats kind of perception isnt it? they may not interest you but 51-41 kent state vs Utah state and 23-16 Liberty vs Georgia southern were more interesting games than Peach Citrus and most of the Sugar bowl

There are not too many bowl games. I'll be missing CFB in two weeks.

The best thing about bowl games is they are OOC games.

No doubt it's perception, which is why I did name any bowl games.

At the end of the day it's more football, and come March, April, May...we were wishing we could all watch just game against a MAC team and a sub .500 SEC team, which is why I just choose what to watch.

Even IF they did that wouldn't they get money from sponsorships and games would still be played?
The could but the sponsorship fees and/or broadcast fees would have to be increased enough to make up for the minimum ticket requirements. That and it would depend on how much the local economy wants to subsidize the game. I know in El Paso their is a local car rental tax dedicated strictly for Sun Bowl payouts. Broadcast rights and sponsorship fees won't cover the entire cost.

The local economies are supposed to benefit from the fans traveling to the bowl location. And a lot of them definitely do. But I've seen a lot of bowl games that must have those fans coming dressed as empty seats. From what I've seen, only a handful of teams have the fan bases that travel that well. Even for those that do like Texas, I doubt very seriously that most UT fans spent more than one night in San Antonio this year...if that. A great many probably drove down that afternoon and right back up I-35 after the game.

Still odd that your guaranteed (for the most part) a bowl game by winning 6 games....
Truly working toward "everyone gets a trophy".
Not there yet or my crappy Miners would have gone to a bowl. :gaah:

Here's one to think about in the previous example. Boston College got whipped by Kansas...in Boston.

If bowls weren't allowed to require a minimum number of tickets for each school, some of them would go away. Make them fund it totally themselves and several of them would go away.

This is a winner winner chicken dinner.

No.

Whatever criticisms we have of teams like BC, I prefer having that game today as opposed to a lot of other crap options on TV.

I think all bowls should be the best 2 out of 3.

I've become to enjoy the New Era Pinstripe bowl. It's unique being played in a baseball stadium, it usually has awful weather given it's in New York City at the end of December, and given it's on in the middle of the day a day or two after Christmas, it is a great bowl game to watch and relax. With that, I am sure within a year or two it'll change names from it's sponsor of New Era and will probably also change names from Pinstripe bowl to something else, making it in about 3-4 years from now a bowl game I quickly forget about and no longer take time to watch.

You win 6 games you get a bowl game

BC is playing Cincinnati at a 3pm game on Thursday after New Years. I mean come on. Who do they expect will actually go to these bowl games besides the teams family?

So are there too many Bowl Games?

Hell yeah there are too many. When I first started watching sports in the 1980s, making it to a bowl game actually meant something.

Short answer is, yes. There are too many bowl games. Win total should be raised up to 7. That will eliminate most of these bowl games. Raising the win total to 7 would've eliminated 13 "bowl teams" this year, lowering the number of bowl games needed down by 6.

They are adding three more bowl games in 2020.
