Report: Colonial Athletic Association to cancel football in 2020
As questions remain over the status of the 2020 college football season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, one FCS conference is reportedly backing out from playing any games in Fall 2020. According to FOX Sports' Bruce Feldman, the Colonial Athletic Association will not be holding a football season in Fall 2020, with an official announcement set to come on Friday.
The CAA is home to 12 football member institutions, including James Madison, Richmond and William & Mary, among others. James Madison is coming off an appearance in the 2019 NCAA FCS National Championship Game and won the FCS national title in 2016 when the Dukes defeated Youngstown State, 28-14.
The reported decision by the CAA would also mean the cancellation of a number of games involving Power 5 opponents for the 2020 college football season. As detailed by Yahoo! Sports, a total of 13 games involving CAA teams this year were set to be played against FBS opponents, with eight coming vs. Power 5 competition. With the looming decision, Duke, Kansas, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Wake Forest and Pitt are among programs who would have their schedules impacted.
