32 is a record for a rookie in an HR derby first round.

ICYMI - This year's AS game has a twist in the event of a tie - each team will put 3 guys up to do a short-form HR derby. The AL is putting up both Jrod AND France as 2/3 of it.

So in the event of a game tie, the M's 2 reps are going to decide it lol.

The format is 3 swings each for all 3 players.

And he takes out the defending HR derby champ.

It's the Jrod-show and we are just going along for the ride...

Had he got one more at 440+ he probably wins with the extra 30 seconds... bummer, but an impressive performance

Good for Soto but JRod put on a show. Super happy and proud.
He'll get 'em next year when the ASG is here!

Some players are just absolutely blessed with gifted talents and JRod is one of them. Falls on the same list as ARod and Griffey Jr. while others worked hard like Edgar.

Haven’t been this excited about a player in a LONG time.

Probably a couple hundred grand, but the kid's gonna be OK shortly. What do we think, 10 years, 350M?
I don’t think the Mariners would offer him 35 a year, but also not sure if his agent would want him to accept a contract extension that long at the moment especially if he wins Rookie of the Year with the new CBA.

An argument could be made at 21 JRod is the best player than Junior. Maybe not, but it is amazing that you can make a legitimate argument for it. Now go get Soto

They have Soto now. They showed last night exactly identical numbers between Soto's rookie year and Jrod to date.

Sure, every team can use a guy like him to make them better, but I'd rather they aggressively go after a mega pitcher deal than this pipe dream of getting Soto.

Jrod is your stud batter, face of the game, more or less franchise.

Load up on arms and go for this thing this year. Setup for a multi year run. Don't hamstring yourself with bad deals and lots of dead money. Stay limber enough to be able to grab free agents and trades for the next several years.

It probably is a pipe dream but for what the asking price for Soto will be exactly what this entire rebuild has been, save on cash and load up on prospects in order to make a big splash deal while also being able to eat an ugly contract.

But yes, they do need at least 1 starter. Something that is going to be an issue is in the heat of the playoff push is when Gilbert is going to be running into innings issues and obviously Kirby will as well.

They loaded up on talent to have young homegrown guys to make them competitive for a long term, not to dump them for short term windows and saddle themselves with dead money again.

Yes, you can and should make trades to help the depth. The deals being discussed go too far when you are only getting him for 2.5 years.

But of the young guys who do they have? They have JRod, Gilbert, Kirby and Raleigh. None of there other top 20 in 2019 are really here. Marte for sure is an untouchable with how the organization is set up but they need to get rid of Hancock and whatever prospect not named whatever that DSL’s dude name is should be on the block. Probably not blow the whole load on one guy but eventually they have to trade guys. The classic and normal example with Lewis/Kelenic/JRod is only 1 makes it. But the Mariners got a ROTY was Lewis and essentially a domination from him when he plays, then Kelenic who struggled in the majors but has shown he is way to good for AAA. The Mariners are loaded with OF’s and pitchers. Deal those bad hopefully get top end of the rotation pitcher and maybe not a Soto but a COF with pop.

I know it is pissing in my Cheerios and really no way for the Soto deal to happen, but Soto is the exact model that Jerry has built and it would be a sham if at least a minimum they put a bid on him for acquiring Soto and Strasburg/Corbin for a package. Soto is worth the moon but he isn’t worth all 3 of Marte, Hancock and Kelenic.

Truthfully with how the roster currently stands Ty France and Haniger (ideally Lewis) could be involved with it so Soto can play the OF, Santana can play 1B and Lewis can play the DH. If no France I’d love Santana being involved but I think Marte’s is untradable unless France can move back to 3B or possibly play 2B.

And since Marte is “untradable” that on paper makes Washington’s price drop to get say a Marte and Kirby/Hancock. Or heck maybe even send Frazier back since his contract is off the books this off-season
