Sure, but I don't think "skeptical" and "not among the top 50 minor league players in the Giants' system" are equivalent.

It's a small nit, but I'm picking it. Very willing to be wrong here.

Yeah, it knocks him out of the top 50...to about 52.

That's too much for me. He's not clearly better than Nate, or what Neal might become. His minor league numbers are not great, and his major league numbers could go either way. I'd put him in the same question mark boat as Panda coming into 2011. Thus, hard to value.

Does that boat also have Sanchez on it? He's another guy with a decent floor and great ceiling but has been disappointing in his development. The Cards wouldn't do a 1 for 1 swap of Rasmus for Sanchez since Rasmus is under team control for one year longer than Sanchez. Like it or not, we are getting to the point where Sanchez is going to be either traded, or locked up (I don't see this happening.) If Sabean feels like he needs to try to repeat this year (especially if the Cocks or DBags make a move) then it's entirely possible that they'd trade him this year for a decent offensive upgrade.

Also, it is possible that Neal could become what Rasmus is, but in a bad year for Rasmus he has similar numbers to Nate in a career year. I like Nate too, and really I don't think Rasmus is really available, but if he is, wouldn't comparing him to Panda mean that we should acquire him? ;)

No Sanchez is not in the same boat as Panda. I think we know what we got in Sanchez. As for Rasmus, just because the coin came up heads with Panda does not mean it will will Rasmus. But, really, what do I know? I'm basing that on stats and on what little I've seen of the guy. BTW, Nate is having a much better year than Rasmus, and Nate's minor league career was stronger too.

Sanchez's walk rate has gone to shit (even for him) this year though, hasn't it? He's getting into Ollie Perez territory if he doesn't drop that back to his career averages soon upon his return. Don't assume that I'm questioning your baseball knowledge gp, I realize that you know much more than I do; just having a good honest debate. :boink:

.329 wOBA Rasmus vs. .349 Nate. So Nate has been having a better year, but what are the odds that at the end of the season that's still the case? Rasmus accumulated more fWAR in 534 PA in 2010 than Nate has in 1,000 PA in his career. Also since Nate produced in the PCL, I don't know if you can say he really had better minor league numbers than Rasmus. Even if you could, that's cancelled by Rasmus being universally regarded as a better prospect.

I don't know, what are the odds that Nate has a better year? Neither one of us have seen enough of Rasmus to really answer that question, I think.

Nate produced at all levels, not just in the pcl. We don't know this is a career year with Nate, and we don't know that this is an anomalous down year with Rasmus. If you got them both on your team then great, let them play and figure it out. But what you are talking about is acquiring Rasmus (and at considerable cost too), and hoping his good year is the real guy. That just not a deal I'd be willing to make for this team this year unless the cost is near zero.

All great points, but the only quibble I have is that if Rasmus was in the middle of a good year, he likely wouldn't be available. What would be a cost that you'd be willing to pay for Rasmus?
