Ben Stiller has played a wider range of rolls than a lot of other actors.

Steve Carell has shown some range as well.

This question made me think of the movie Mad Dog and Glory. Always thought it was interesting how Bill Murray and Robert De Niro showed their range in that by playing the opposite character of how one might have expected that film to be cast.

When I think of actors with range I think of actors in a drama, say Gods and Generals, and the guy makes me think, "Holy shit! I can't believe this guy was in Dumb and Dumber.!" A guy like Jeff Daniels. D.D. Lewis is one of the finest dramatic actors of all time, but I don't ever seeing him pulling off comedy. Tom Hanks is on the list. Brad Pitt? Not so much.

I'd agree with that....it might be simplistic view in my mind, but if a guy only excels at or does only drama, I don't know if that's a ton of range (even if you want to ague there are different types of drama).

Someone like Will Smith, Matt Damon, Samuel L. Jackson...they can do drama, comedy, thriller type movies well.

Tom Hanks & Denzel Washington are always the 1st ones I think of.
One that someone mentioned & I never think of Is Gary Oldman.
But maybe because I forget he is acting. He might be the best for that reason.
Watched him in State of Grace (which makes me think of Ed Harris as well BTW) then watched another movie with Oldman in it. Didn't even realize at the time it was the same actor.
Maybe consider him the most underrated with range or something.
