This is end of season numbers without including the conference tournament results...
With everyone comparing how much better we are than the PAC12, I thought it would be interesting to see how we compare this year to that group of schools who deflected from us, bought off the BIg East name and think they're so much better than us. So here's my comparison...
Big East vs. AAC 2018-2019 Comparison
End of Regular Season Results:
For the most accurate comparison we compare 10 teams in each conference: Big East vs AAC (10-10)
Keep in mind that this comparison doesn't account for ECU and Tulane or their affect on the AAC NET rankings...
Head to Head Results (# represents the current placing in each conference, respectively):
#1 Nova beats #3 Temple
#1 Nova beats #9 UCONN
#6 Georgetown beats #8 USF
#10 SMU beats #6 Georgetown
#2 Cincy beats #4 Xavier
#6 Wichita St. beats #8 Providence
3-3 Tie in Head to Head action
Big East best win against our #3
AAC best win against their #4
NET Rankings (Most important metric used for NCAA Tournament selection and seeding) in Top 100
Big East - 25, 29, 54, 62, 63 / 66, 71, 74, 76 (10) in Top 100;
DePaul - 100
620 / 10 = Avg. NET of 62
AAC - 4, 27, 28, 50, 53 / 89, 90, 95, 97
(9) in Top 100;
SMU - 103
636 / 10= Avg. NET of 63.6
Final Result:
Top to bottom these teams are very comparable, with the BE having a slight edge in Avg. NET rankings.
The top 5 in the AAC are stronger than the top 5 in BE this year, with the BE teams 6-10 being stronger than the AAC's 6-10 based off end of regular season NET rankings. (3/11)
With that being said, the AAC is the ONLY one of the two leagues that can claim a Head to Head win by a supposed lesser team (SMU,#103 NET) against a BE team that's supposed to be better (#76 NET). This is the only fact we have to show that the bottom of our league is as strong or maybe even stronger than the bottom half of the Big East, making Tulane and ECU's negative impact on our NET rankings shine very clearly.
This is what I believe gives the AAC the true edge in claiming to be the better conference in 2018-2019 than both the Big East and PAC12. The question now is, will the NCAA Tournament results support this conclusion?
