Mentioned the other day, I knew Hicks going down was a great thing, cause he is bad, but I never thought opening up a spot for Ellsbury was gonna be the key part of that

I give Paul Oneill credit, hes' been calling Ellsbury a hidden gem for them all season, how many times he said "This guy is not a .230 hitter"

Eh, not everything is based on salary, his comments were more based on current day expectations, which were "Anyone but Ellsbury"

He's certainly no Brett Gardner.

he's being paid $21M for a sub-100 OPS+ and he's no longer an elite baserunner

Oh no one will ever defend that contract, but he has without a doubt been the most unexpected surprise of the season, since he became an everyday guy again

I agree. If Mauer walked away the PR hit would have been a nightmare. Throw in the Kung Fu Panda contract, the Sox got exactly nothing for that. Ellsbury is another disaster but at least he's on the field.

Panda is as well. Granted he can't field or hit worth a lick

He's certainly no Brett Gardner.

Gardner has been is usual streaky self. 20 HR's for a lead off guy is pretty solid and he plays a nice left field. Always wears down at the end of the year though.

Lets see if he keeps that up. He tends to get hurt. The Yanks will probably rotate the 4 of them (Judge, Ells, Gardy and Frazier) to keep them all fresh. Not sure what the deal with Hicks is

I hope Hicks takes his sweet time...Im good with this 4 man rotation, Girardi has a hard on for Hicks and forces his useless bat into the lineup.....2 good months has wiped out an otherwise very pedestrian career in the eyes of the Yankees

I noticed that myself with Hicks. Good outfielder, nice arm but having all the tools hasn't added up to much other than the 2 months you mentioned

Gardner's power numbers really fell off a cliff in the 2nd half. He went from 36 extra base hits (17 home runs) and a .198 ISO to just 14 extra base hits (5 home runs) and a .117 ISO (well below the league average, which is around .172) in the 2nd half. Still providing a solid .350 OBP though.

Negative. I'd vote for Chase Headley in the second half being the most unexpected surprise on the Yankees (other than Judge of course).

9 pitch first for Tomlin. Let's keep that up.

Turned it to the Yankees game for the first time. Yanks put up a 6 spot in the first. Wow

Homer Bailey's 6/$105 million deal is the worst "least talked about" contract in baseball. He'll make $44 million over the next two years, and then get a $5 million buyout.

I have a challenger: Alex Gordon

Bad and getting worse:

12 mill last year

16 mill this year (for a collective .213 BA .636 OPS and a OPS+ of 70).

Not only does he miss significant time each year but he's due 20 mill in 18, 20 mill in 19, and a 4 mill buyout (or $23 mill mutual option) in 20.

Bonus points - he literally turned to shit the second he signed that big deal.

Still think Bailey is worse. Bailey with more money, and at least Alex Gordon still provides a little something with his defense.
