Well, I figured this game was the Giants' best chance to steal a win in this series. D-Rod was terrible, though. They had plenty of chances to score as well, lots of runners on 3rd base were stranded.

Oh well, at least they got yesterday. Because tomorrow is Scherzer

Gearrin is freakin useless
Maybe he is losing ground in the depth chart. The team did walk away from Kontos when he was having a much better season than this.

:noidea:

One can only hope.

They avoided the sweep. I am happy.

Though today was aggravating because of all the stranded RISP.

Yeah, thank goodness they won yesterday to avoid the possibility of getting swept. Happy just to get one win in this series based on Washington's record over the last month.

Also, good to see them make a game of it today after falling behind 5-0, rather than just rolling over and getting blown out.

It's amazing what happens to his ERA when he comes in to games with no runners on.

All of Gearrin's numbers have gone sideways this year.

ERA is 5.11

WHIP is 1.74 (30 hits, 13 walks, 3 HBB in only 24 innings)

His GO/AO ratio has flipped, too. His career mark is 1.58 meaning he gets more ground outs than fly outs. This season, it is 0.96, meaning he is no longer getting grounders but fly balls. (He's given up 5 homers).

AND he's allowed 10 of 21 inherited runners to score. The Inherited Runner thing goes back a few years, last year it was 20/41.

So WHY is he still on this staff?

Because they are not convinced Ray Black is ready yet, none of the 40 man guys in Sacramento are healthy and/or posting good numbers and because Gearrin is a "proven" veteran.

It's weird with relievers, we all wanted Dyson gone too at one point...

Gearrin's GO/AO and GB% have been trending in the wrong direction every year with the Giants. Not a great sign, especially since he's basically viewed as the 'groundball specialist' (another reason I think Boch likes him in tough situations). Last I checked, Gearrin was actually the worst at generating groundballs in the Pen. AT least it seems like Boch has realized this as well

I was on the fence with Dyson. I'm not with Gearrin. But I think he'll be here all season.

Fair enough point being Dyson turned it around, maybe Gearrin can too. Not to say it's a lock or anything.

I think Gearrin is a little better than his current numbers but his issues have been trending for awhile. Dyson, on the other hand, had a rocky start to the season but pulled it out fairly quickly.

Dyson has demonstrated elite-ness in his past. Gearrin has only demonstrated meh-ness in his past. I am willing to give Dyson more rope to hang himself than I am Gearrin.

I was actually excited for Gearrin potentially making the team, going into the 2016 season. The Giants picked him up after he had missed a season due to injury (was it TJ surgery? cannot remember right now) and he pitched well in his late season debut in 2015. He posted an ERA of 4.91 in 7 games but with a mere 0.545 WHIP. Interestingly, I thought he deserved a chance because the two runs he allowed were going because Josh Osich couldn't finish off the inning where he inherited both of Gearrin's runners. Little did I know that Gearrin would pay everyone back for that.
