I can answer that. Because if both Grap and KC enter FA, there is no guarantee they get either. This way they land one that they are confident can be a franchise QB, for relatively cheap i might add. And they still retain their 1st round pick that they can most likely parlay into multiple young starters for a good rebuild base. This was a real smart move by SF.

But they should have the most money in FA so why worry? Plus they had the fact that KC could want to reunite with Kyle. If they did lose out on both they still could draft a qb with there first round pick.

I've asked the same questions and have spent days sifting through reports and insider tweets on this. This is what I've been able to piece together.

1. Kyle/Lynch were high on both Cousins and Grop.
2. The Niners weren't certain that Cousins wouldn't get another franchise tag (Snyder is a wildcard).
3. If the Niners had to fight it out in FA for Cousins, the team had a leg up on other teams (Shanny)
4. However, the Niners wouldn't have that advantage if they had to chase Grop in FA.
5. Grop's OC could easily become a HC this offseason, and Grop would almost certainly follow him.
6. B/c of 2, 4, and 5, the Niners could be left w/o Grop or KC and would have to draft a QB.
7. Kyle/Lynch weren't as high on the QB draft class as they were on Grop and Cousins.
8. The Pats' price for Grop dropped to something the Niners would pay (and would've paid in February 2017).
9. The Niner FO knows what it'll take to resign Grop and are willing to pay it or are willing to tag him.
10. Getting Grop before FA gives the team a leg up to resign him before the wild spending opening day of FA.

From what I can put together, that is why this trade happened now and the team didn't wait until FA opened to try for one of the Qbs.

Ok but you still are getting a unknown QB for your system verses a know Qb in KC. I don't think money is the issue in FA for you guys. I don't understand how Kyle is high on Grap when he didn't play in his system and has only played 3 NFL games. #5 is an interesting point.

Now you are going to have to pay Grap 25m in 2018 for an unproven QB for your system. Versus a rookie QB on a cheap 5 year deal. Do you really think the 49ers can win in the next three years with Grap? Are the 49ers going to be pressured to win soon b/c of the huge deal they give to Grap in 2018?

Weren't you the one arguing that tagging Cousins allows the Redskins the chance to see how he progresses this season to see if he is worth a huge extension? Same thing here. The 49ers get to take a look at Garappolo (for next to no $$) for the balance of the season to determine if he is worth an extension. They most likely think he is but they want to be sure. Sure if it turns sour they lose a 2nd rd pick, but that is probably better then being tied down w/ a huge contract for a long time, and the track record for Ex-Pats QBs is not good.

The 49ers don't have a team around him to succeed this year. This is not a show me year fro Grap. This trade means he is the guy. Grap is going to get 25m next season no matter how he plays this year. Plus the Redskins didn't have the option of having the #1 or #2 pick in the draft to get a QB. Bad example socal.

I agree. If the choice is between Grop and Cousins, I'd go Cousins, but that is NOT the choice the Niners had here.

I don't understand how Kyle is high on Grap when he didn't play in his system and has only played 3 NFL games.
Kyle has been high on Grop since the 2014 draft, where he had Grop and Carr as the two highest-rated QBs in the entire draft. Grop's limited play in the NFL only strengthened Kyle's high grade on him.

Now you are going to have to pay Grap 25m in 2018 for an unproven QB for your system. Versus a rookie QB on a cheap 5 year deal.
The reality of the NFL is not that black and white. We essentially just drafted Grop in the 2nd rd, but b/c he played well in actual NFL games, we're paying him almost double what the 1st overall picks makes. And you, yourself admitted that money isn't the issue for the Niners, so that's a nonfactor.

Versus a rookie on the cheap? Smh. You mean versus a rookie that has less than a 50% chance of success and has never played in an NFL game? The overwhelming majority of Qbs drafted into the NFL NEVER look as good as Grop did in his 2.5 games. I'll happily pay more for piece for mind.

Do you really think the 49ers can win in the next three years with Grap? Are the 49ers going to be pressured to win soon b/c of the huge deal they give to Grap in 2018?
I expect the Niners to be competitive in 2019 and winning will be expected in 2020, so yes. However, there won't be any pressure to win right away b/c the team is currently in year 1 of a complete rebuild. The HC and GM are in year 1 of 6-year contracts, and they have complete job security b/c our idiot ownership is currently paying 3 HCs (Tomsula, Kelly, and Shanny).

Actually, its an excellent example. Dean,I know you will never agree or understand this, but a rookie is a huge risk over a QB that has been under the tutelage of an NFL coach like Belicheck. The chances of Grap being a franchise qb at this point is mile ahead of any QB entering the 2018 draft.

Kyle was really high on Jimmy G coming out of college. Jimmy G and Derek Carr were his two top QBs. A second rd pick is not a big deal but financially you are right it means spending more money. That is the risk. Won't be competitive next year but after that who knows. With all the picks in the next couple of rounds and available cap space to spend on free agents, it depends on what the FO does with its picks. I know one thing, despite what some media heads say, the KC to SF option is never going to happen now.

But you are evaluating GRap on the Patriots with an offensive coordinator that made Tebow look good. Yes money isn't a issue but if you are going to pay it, pay it to a proven guy. I mention rookie b/c there is no pressure to win for that rookie. My point is you are paying a QB money that should mean he has to win. Where you could of gotten a rookie to develop. The 49ers being competitive in 2019 is a stretch.

How can you say that? Small sample size and with a team with talent and good coaching. He is just as much a risk then a top rookie. Plus you are paying double the price for the risk. IF you are in a rebuild then rebuild.

I agree with this post. I didn't know about shanny being high on grap. You are right its not the draft pick its the money.

I think it was Barnwell who came up with the scenario where the 49ers would try JG for the rest of the season and if they didn't like him would just let him go for a comp pick and then would throw the brinks truck at JC. That will never happen. I think JC's option's aren't all that much. I would think there is a pretty good chance JC ends up back in Washington unless his relationship with the FO is unrepairable. You would know about that more than I would

Just because you have the most money in FA doesn't mean you go out and give Haynesworth 100 million guaranteed.

They may have had a chance to reunite with KC. They would have to negotiate a contract and still wait on KC to make a choice.

Maybe this QB class isn't what you think it is.

Tag number for every team is 22 mil this 2018 season...well except us...it is 35 million because BA made history as being the dumbest FO person in history.

The 49ers haven't been far from winning this season.

You're not hearing me. He was evaluated back in 2014 and what he's done since then only affirmed that very high rating. The only difference at this point between the draft and the Grop trade is money and some team was gonna pay Grop 20-someodd million per year this offseason, so it might as well be us.

Pay it to a proven guy? The Niners had no guarantee that "a proven guy" would be available and willing to sign here. Grop is essentially is a rookie, and considering the Niners' current situation, there won't be much pressure to win this season or next season.

Graps playing experience is something like AJ McCarron's. He has very little experience but what he does have has been very good. Yes they will have to pay him a lot of money but it is the going rate for QBs now.

Sure you can draft one and pay him less but as was said earlier it is probably at best a 50/50 shot he pans out.

Let me ask you this. Why go the cheaper unproven route when you had a chance to get KC? Even if KC gets a long term deal or franchised from the Skins the 49ers could still go after Grap in FA which would of cost them nothing. Why the move right now?
This is what kills me , you think KC isn’t worth it yet that gets erased because you think any team will shell out big bucks for a mere stat man , big game choker , and game manager who can’t carry a team ....... I find this telling

This is the arguement to keep KC !!!!! Yet you are trying to sell the 49ers this! Laughable

Not the argument at all. We are not in the position for a 1st or 2nd overall pick in the draft. Why cant you see this?

There was still a shot to go after KC is the Skins don't sign him. IF that failed they could of paid Grap without giving up the pick. With the draft pick you are going to have if you are going to rebuild, rebuild. Grap is just as much of risk and paying double the money.
