We all groaned and complained about the horrific season that this team had. We (it seems) collectively wanted to fire them all, hang the owner in effigy or cut the players. To be sure it was a horrible season but a fortunate one for this franchise. Here's why: Suppose instead of 3-13 the team finished somewhere at or near 8-8, what would the chatter be then? I'm sure that we would in some form or fashion convince ourselves that were it not for this or that this group would be vying for a title sooner than later. Worse that Mike Shanahan should be given an extension and be allowed to continue his quest to return DC back to prominence. This is reason one why we were blessed to see it now as opposed to later. The other happened on the field. Amid dreams of using a running game and accurate passing to win another NFC East title, those blinded by hope were given a real dose of reality. Who can claim NOW that the team has most of its pieces in place? That the dysfunction didn't have to come from the owner when he gave us that with the hire of a relic. Now there's talk of another stale breath from the past replacing him. Have we not learned or must we endure another long journey into fantasy??
