With the restrictions of traveling into Canada, the NHL is proposing a temporary realignment that would have a seven team Canadian division, along with 8 team US divisions in the east, central and west. This certainly makes a lot of sense.
I'd add a schedule that has all back to back games for teams. Games would be scheduled on consecutive nights (just like US college hockey) and would have one or two days between each pair. There would also be geographic scheduling as much as possible. For example, Toronto would play back-to-back games in Calgary, followed by a 2 day break and then back-to-back games in Edmonton. Similarly, Chicago could do a Tampa and Florida trip; Boston a Rangers/Isles trip; etc.
