Based on tz’s numbers (and I will trust them all for simplicity sake), and assuming we keep all of them without any extensions, that means we are at approx 120m. Assuming the cap will be approx 180m, that doesn’t offer us a lot of room FOR NEXT YEAR. Though, I don’t expect a lot of money to be spent yet anyway. We still need Bart to establish himself (not a given after his showing this year) and Ramos, Luciano, Canario and Wilson to all make their way to SF.

i think Gausman will be a target, but I have a feeling he will be in too much demand and will price himself out of our market.

I think that FZ isn't going to pay a dime over what he thinks any FA is worth. I believe he'd rather keep his powder dry than overpay.

I like this approach.

I'm okay with both coming back but Smyly, I'd hope, isn't more than a 1 or 2 year deal. There is still too much uncertainty with his health to see him locked in long term.

I like this approach.

It's a rebuild. He will not need to overpay anyone.

And I can't see why he wouldn't trade Cueto for salary relief and a prospect.

I can't see FZ giving either pitcher more than 2 years. I could see both getting 3+ from another team.

Odds both come back: 1/5
Odds one comes back 1/2
Odds neither come back 1/2

While these threads have been fun in the past ("rosterbation", altho it isn't marked as such) ... with FZ being around, there are new realities which make it very difficult to see into the future ...

- FZ will grab 12-20 guys off of waivers during the offseason, swapping them around, then dropping most of them (DFA)
- FZ will sign several people to minor league contracts, ... then dump a lot of them
- a bunch of unknown guys will get their chance in Spring Training, but of the few chosen some will be real head-scratchers (except that they won't have the 'stink' of the Sabean / Bochy era)
- FZ will try very hard to trade away contracts that he inherited ("for flexibility"), ... but :
- The Giants won't be signing any big names (altho the front office will talk a big game)

I expect the team to start the 2021 season with no new "stars", and a team good enough to figure "middle of the pack" (ranked 14-20 in MLB). Frankly I'd prefer that they totally suck (for good draft position) rather than just stay middle of the pack (if those were the only two choices).

One thing I will say that is pro- FZ : over the past two years he has picked up quite a few players who have the possibility to be "good" (better than simply replacement, but no stars) which is (IMO) absolutely necessary to compete long term; i.e., having a core of "good" and cheap players to which one can add a bit of star-power, mix, and possibly have a post-season team. The only player that FZ is "forced" to have on the 2022 team (well, or at least pay him) is Longoria. All the other guys are either option years (Belt, Crawford, Posey, Cueto, Flores ...) or arb-eligible.

Anti- F : a lot of those players are in the minors (off and on) and not given a steady, ongoing chance to show what they can do. Ten or 20 or 30 days up, then whoooosh, back to the minors.

I find it interesting that every offseason, the Giants want to get a veteran backstop to be Posey's backup, but the one year he opted out, they were fine with rolling with two rookies most of the season.

Looking over the 40 man roster, it does not appear that the Giants need to let go of anyone to activate the guys who opted out of the 2020 season or who are on the 60 day IL. Currently, there are 38 players on the 40 man roster. Of those 38, 4 will be free agents at the conclusion of the World Series (Cahill, Gausman, Smyly & Watson; not counting Samardzija, who is already off the 40 man). The Giants have 2 players on the restricted list (Posey & Humphreys) and another 4 players on the 60 day IL (Rickard, A. Garcia, Moronta & Beede). All those moves would put the roster right at 40 players.

Assuming that the rules won't change between now and the end of November, the players that will be eligible for the Rule 5 draft that the org may have to seriously consider protecting are: Camilo Doval, Gregory Santos & Alexander Canario.

Further assuming that these 3 players get protected, the Giants will have to dfa 3 additional players. Here is my list of likely dfa's (or non-tenders) this offseason: Rickard, Duggar, Shaw, Heineman, Basabe, Gott, Banda, Suarez, Coonrod & R Garcia.

They will suck next year too. Need to put up with sucking for a while and draft well. I am just hoping they don't piss away a lot of salary on players way passed their prime unless its for a short term deal.

If anyone wants to peruse the free agent list, you can find it here - 2020-21 MLB Free Agents

I'm beginning to wonder if the only way Gausman returns is if the Giants really overpay for him. There is a real lack of depth in starting pitching this offseason. He may be top 10 in starting pitcher free agents, which is scary. Most of these guys are well past their prime (it would have been a very strong class if this were 5 years ago).

I think they are going to extend the QO for him. That should depress his value a bit.

Interesting thought. I never even thought of him as a QO candidate, but you may be right...

I just read that he could be offered that. Seems a bit expensive but upside is that he'd only be locked in to a one year deal if he accepts, so that, if he stinks, the team can walk away after 2021.
It will be interesting to see how many guys are offered QOs this offseason and how many of them accept the offers. The talk of less money available due to the pandemic would, I think, suppress the quantity offered but push the amount of those accepted up.

MLB Trade Rumors released their projected arbitration numbers. They used 3 different methods to come up with 3 sets of numbers. The methods are:

  • Method 1: Applies model directly with actual statistics from this 60-game season
  • Method 2: Extrapolates all counting stats to would-be 162-game totals. One home run becomes 2.7 home runs.
  • Method 3: For non-first-time eligibles, finds the raise they’d get in a 162 game season, then gives them 37% of that raise
The full article can be found here. Below are the numbers for the Giants' arb eligible players (I've added yours at the end of each player to compare with their projections):

  • Daniel Robertson – $1.2MM / $1.3MM / $1.1MM / $1.2MM
  • Tyler Anderson – $2.4MM / $4.3MM / $3.7MM / $2.5MM
  • Alex Dickerson – $2.0MM / $3.3MM / $1.8MM / $1.5MM
  • Jarlin Garcia – $900K / $1.3MM / $900K / $800K
  • Trevor Gott – $700K / $1.0MM / $700K / $800K
  • Reyes Moronta – $800K / $800K / $800K / $800K
  • Wandy Peralta – $1.0MM / $1.2MM / $1.0MM / $1.0MM
  • Austin Slater – $1.1MM / $1.7MM / $1.1MM / $800K
  • Donovan Solano – $2.2MM / $3.8MM / $2.3MM / $2.0MM
