Yeah he is, and probably the most respected GM in the league!

I know the claims about Newsome, but the results don’t scream it. I know that is what they say regarding respect as well. How much of that is his being the first black man to hold that job?

Newsome took over late 2002, so we will start in 2003.

137-103 record...pretty good I must admit. Far better than us.

7 out of 15 years with double digit wins.

Only three losing seasons. I didn’t realize this. It just doesn’t seem they are ever very good.

2003 draft...only Terrell Suggs was anything.
2004...not sure why they drafted at all
2005...Dan Cody was decent
2006...Haloti Ngata and Dawan Landry
2007...Ben Grubbs, Marshall Yanda, and Le’Ron McClain...good draft
2008...several good players
2009...Oher, Kruger, and Ladarius Webb...good draft.
2010...Ed Dickson, Dennis Pitta, and Arthur Jones...not great or even good
2011...several good players...good draft
2012...ok draft
2013...pretty bad draft...highlight Kyle Juschyk
2014...Mosley and Jernigan...nothing to write home about
2015...worst draft ever maybe
2016 and 2017...hard to say but doesn’t look good

I am a results guy. I have no idea how they have been reasonably good based on their drafts, but like I said, results matter. Good job Ozzie.

You seem to have an issue with "first Black...." in a system set up where such things are noticed. Where you see a "black man" I just see a man. Oh well!!

Drafts come and drafts go, mistakes are made everywhere, and on every team, as are the hits. That said, drafting players is just one part of the GM's job. Yes, it's important, but so are the working conditions under which everyone must operate. Contracts and cap management are also important to the task, as is, public and player relations. When exactly, was the first and only time that there were complaints about any aspect of the job that Newsome has done vs. a guy like Bruce Allen? We all are aware of this, so, for any of us attempting to belittle a GM like Ozzie Newsome, ( "the first black GM") one must surmise it's frankly, either envy at play or, worse case, based on something not related to our better selves.

So let me ask the obvious question, if you had the power to make the hire, and neither wasn't an option, would you go with Bruce or Ozzie?

Its almost like everybody sucks at drafting and nobody actually knows what they're doing.

Seriously? I'd take your grandmother over Bruce. Ozzie hands down.

I have a problem with somebody being propped up, simply because they are black. I don’t believe that is the case for Newsome, because, as I said, results matter and his results have been good...even if his drafts have not.

I understand ther is more to a GM than the draft. That is likely why Ozzie has been good at his job. There is no comparison between Allen and Newsome, so I am not sure why you would bring him up.

Asking questions isn’t belittling. On top of that, I ended up posting support for Newsome so perhaps there was misconception based simply on a boring team being run well.

That is a ridiculous question. Newsome in a heartbeat at ten times the salary.

Heck - I would take Ozzie Osbourne (in his current state) over Bruce Allen.

Here's why I bought up Allen:

I've studied Allen's history extensively and have not yet found one word about him being "propped up" because he was the son of a former HC. The benefit of doubt goes to him and what he does using his own energy, whereas, "because he's black" dismisses the same in relation to Newsome.

NFL Draft 2018 Grades: Analysis of Round 1 Picks

Excerpt....

13. Washington Redskins—DT Da'Ron Payne
Was Payne really the player that Washington wanted, or were there resounding groans across the war room when Tampa Bay took Vita Vea just one spot earlier? Here’s an argument for why Washington’s front office will be telling the truth when it says Payne was its top target all along: he can rush the passer. A pass rush is critical when you play as much zone as Washington, and Payne, with his light feet and some oomph in his movement, should help a run D that ranked 29th in yards per attempt last year. Interestingly, Washington drafted an Alabama interior pass rusher in the first round last year: Jonathan Allen.

GRADE: B-

Fran has us taking Guice in the 2nd...

Not my choice but not a bad selection. Looking at this second round mock I'm troubled by the NYG getting Will Hernandez. This guy is a road grader and trouble for us with him pushing to open up running space for Barkley.

It's going to be interesting to read the annual post draft grades that will be given here.
