The former LSU hitting coach who just started his second season with the Bulldogs will reportedly by terminated Tuesday morning, according to a report from 247 Sports' David H. Murray.

The report said an official statement is forthcoming, but Cannizaro's firing is with cause, though University officials have yet to state what the cause is. Pitching coach Gary Henderson is reported to be named as Cannizaro's replacement for the remainder of the 2018 season.

A players-only meeting was reportedly held Monday evening. The Bulldogs opened the 2018 season this past weekend, losing to Southern Mississippi in a three-game sweep.


The Bulldogs went 40-27 with a 17-13 SEC record in Cannizaro's lone full season, making him only the second Mississippi State coach to have a 40-win season in his first year.

Cannizaro spent two seasons with LSU before making his way to Mississippi State. He is a Tulane alumnus where he was an All-American for the Green Wave in the 90s, and played professional baseball for eight seasons, including two stints in the MLB with the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays.

More bad news for the Tiger baseball team after losing the opening series of the season to Notre Dame.

Shortstop Josh Smith has a "stress reaction" in his vertebrae and will be out for at least a month.

The Catholic High star played third base last year and moved to SS this season, taking over for the departed Kramer Robertson.

In the opening series against Notre Dame, Smith batted .222, including game one's dramatic three-run home run that propelled LSU to a 7-6 victory over the Irish.

The Tigers are back in action Wednesday night when they host UNO at Alex Box Stadium.

FSU has lost All-American pitcher Tyler Holten for the season. He tore his UCL and
is having Tommy John surgery.

Sands will return as the Friday starter. Parrish will move from Sunday to Saturday
and this weekend, we'll try Austin Pollock on Sunday.

We have pitching depth so this is not that troubling...YET. Holten was always good
for 6 innings and often went 7 or 8. If we have to go to our pen a lot, we could
run out of arms by Sunday.

It will really hurt in the post-season, unless someone emerges to fill the void.

Texas leads the all-time series with LSU, 21-10-1, and this weekend’s matchup marks the Longhorns’ first visit to Baton Rouge since 1999, when UT opened the year by winning two of three games over the Tigers. SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Preseason All-West Coast Conference selection Jake Brodt blasted two grand slams in the seventh inning to power the Santa Clara baseball past Boston College, 20-9, and help head coach Rusty Filter earn his first win at the school.

Brodt is just the seventh Division I player to hit two grand slams in one inning since the official NCAA Division I baseball records began keeping track in 1957. He is the first to record the feat since T.J. Soto of Louisiana Tech did it against Western Kentucky in 2000.

Brodt's first grand slam came with Santa Clara trailing 9-7 and gave the Broncos the go ahead runs. Santa Clara loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batsmen setting the stage for the six-foot-five first baseman against Eagles right-handed pitcher John Witkowski.

"In similar situations in the past, I tend to get jumpy but after being in that position and experiencing it multiple times, I was able to find comfort in the box," said the senior. "I've been seeing the ball well and I just wanted to trust my swing and that's what I did."

The same bases loaded situation presented itself later in the inning with the Broncos up, 16-7, this time against left-hander Mitch Bigras.

"It was definitely on my mind," said Brodt when the opportunity came up to potentially hit a second grand slam. "How often do you come up with that type of situation twice in an inning. I just tried to stay comfortable in the box and not try to do too much with it. I knew right off the bat when I hit it."

Asked about the reaction of his teammates after the grand slams, the senior captain said, "Some were quiet because they were in disbelief but everyone was super excited for me. I'm excited for the team because we've been working so hard these past few months and we deserved this win."

The second grand slam capped off a 14 run inning for the Broncos, which included seven hit batsmen. It also capped off a three home run day for Brodt who hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to cut the Broncos deficit to 9-6.

"For the first homerun, I was in a position where I couldn't tie the game or put us ahead at that point so I was just trying to get a base hit," said Brodt. "Luckily the pitcher game me a pitch I could handle. I just tried to put my team in a position to score and I'm glad everyone carried that momentum the rest of the game. "

A momentum that he rode into a record night, going 3-for-5 at the plate, all going for home runs while driving in 10 runs. Fittingly, Brodt drove in the first run of the game for the Broncos on a sacrifice fly in the first.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 11 Texas A&M Baseball continue their season-opening, nine-game homestand with a series against the Cornell Big Red. The schedule for the series has been adjusted with a doubleheader slated for Friday, starting at 3 p.m. and finishing with Saturday’s regularly-scheduled 2 p.m. contest.

Every game of the series is available for viewing on SEC Network + with Will Johnson and Mark Johnson on the call. Texas A&M is playing host to an Ivy League opponent for the fifth consecutive season. The Maroon & White are 10-0 against the league since 2014, including series sweeps against Brown (2017), Yale (2016) and Dartmouth (2015), along with a midweek victory against Columbia in 2014.

The Aggies are looking to continue their recent string of stellar play in February. The last five seasons, the Aggies own a 3-6-3 mark the opening month, including 4-0 this season. Pepperdine accounted for two of the losses, including 2-1 in College Station in 2017 and 7-5 in Malibu in 2016. The other loss came against Sacramento State (1-0) in 2014.

Texas A&M’s offense has been led by the one-two punch of Zach DeLoach and Michael Helman at the top of the order. Through four games, the do the duo is a combined 18-for-33 (.545) with five walks, two HBP, 15 runs, 3 doubles, two triples, four home runs and nine RBI. The pair has accounted for 42.9% of the team’s hits and 57.7% of the team’s runs. They’ve combined for a .625 on-base percentage and 1.121 slugging percentage.

DeLoach, the reigning SEC Freshman of the Week, is 11-for-14 (.786) at the plate the last three games. He put in an epic performance Tuesday, hitting for the cycle and tying the Aggie single-game record for runs with five. A solid performance this weekend would put him in line to become just the second player to ever earn SEC Freshman of the Week in consecutive weeks and the first to earn the award in the first two weeks of the season.

Texas A&M entered the week ranked from 10th to 11th in the four nationally recognized polls. The Maroon & White are ranked 10th by Baseball America and D1Baseball.com and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and 11th by the USA Today Coaches Poll.

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. –– Riley Johnson tossed the first solo no-hitter of the 2018 college baseball season as the North Dakota State University baseball team posted a 2-0 shutout victory over Central Connecticut State Friday, Feb. 23, at South County Regional Park in the opening game of the Snowbird Baseball Classic.

We brought in a new kid...Drohan. He faced 3...walked the first 2 and the 3rd one
went yard. (We'll see him again sometime next February)

Staff walked 5 but had 9 k's and surrendered just 4 hits.

Parrish tomorrow and then Pollock will make his debut on Sunday. We'll all be watching

Aggie baseball takes Game 1 of Cornell double-header

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – It was a tale of two games as the No. 11 Texas A&M Aggies swept a doubleheader from the Cornell Big Red with a nail-biting 3-2 triumph in the lid lifter and a 22-0 shellacking in the night cap Friday at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.

In the second game, Chris Andritsos became the second Aggie to hit for the cycle on the week, joining Zach DeLoach. He batted 4-for-6 with one walk, three runs and five RBI. It looked like Andritsos wouldn’t get the chance for the cycle when he popped up in the seventh inning, but with two outs in the eighth, Braden Shewmake, Aaron Walters and Cole Taylor all singled to bring the big bopper to the plate. He responded by bouncing a single up the middle to add to his first-inning triple, second-inning home run and third inning double.

The run tally was the most for the Aggies since scoring 22 against Wake Forest at the 2016 College Station Regional. Texas A&M’s 29 hits came up one shy of the Aggie single-game record set at Texas Tech on April 6, 1985.

DeLoach, the reigning SEC Freshman of the Week, reached base at least three times for the fifth consecutive game. The Lewisville, Texas native is hitting 14-for-19 with a .760 on-base percentage over that stretch including three triples and a pair of dingers.

Ten different Aggies scored a run in the second game and seven different Aggies drove in multiple runs. Altogether, the Maroon and White bats tallied 17 singles, four doubles, three triples and three home runs. Will Frizzell reached base five times, going 3-for-4 with two walks, four runs, one double and two RBI.

On the mound in game two, five Aggies combined to keep the Big Red off the scoreboard. Chandler Jozwiak (2-0) made his second career start throwing 5.0 innings, striking out five, earning the win while allowing two hits. A pair of Aggie arms made perfect collegiate debuts following Jozwiak, Asa Lacy in the sixth and Jack Conlon in the seventh. Jason Ruffcorn pitched the eighth working around a couple Cornell baserunners before Kyle Richardson worked a spotless ninth to secure the Aggies’ largest margin in a shutout win since 1912 (23-0 over Trinity University).

In the opener, Stephen Kolek (2-0) pitched well in his second start of the season. The junior pitched 6.0 frames, striking out five while allowing one run on three hits and three walks. Kaylor Chafin came on in relief allowing one Cornell run in the seventh. Closing things out, Nolan Hoffman kept the Big Red out of the run column for his 2.0 innings earning the Aggies’ first save of the season.

GAME ONE SCORING SUMMARY
B2 | Texas A&M (5-0) opened the scoring with a one spot in the second frame off Cornell righty Tommy Morris (0-1). Will Frizzell went first to home on a two-out double off the bat of Hunter Coleman. A&M 1, Cornell 0.

T3 | Cornell (0-1) quickly evened the score in the third. Dale Wickham came through with an RBI groundout with the bases full. Kolek was able to knock the ball down preventing more runs from scoring but had to settle for just the one out at first. A&M 1, Cornell 1.

B3 | Aaron Walters led off the fifth with a base knock followed by George Janca reaching on a bunt single. Walters was able to hustle his way into third on the hit putting him in a position to score on the subsequent DeLoach sacrifice fly. After Michael Helman singled, putting runners on the corners, Shewmake came through with an RBI groundout. A&M 3, CU 1

T7 | The Big Red cut the lead in half in off Chafin in the seventh. With runners on the corners and two down, Ellis Bitar delivered going the other way with an RBI single. Chafin kept it a one-run game, inducing an inning-ending grounder to Frizzell at first. A&M 3, Cornell 2.

GAME TWO SCORING SUMMARY

B1 | Texas A&M (6-0) jumped on Cornell starter Tyler Fernandez (0-1) early putting up a seven spot in the opening frame. After DeLoach and Helman reached, Shewmake drove in the first run with a single before Coleman drove in a Helman with a double. Shewmake score on a wild pitch and Coleman advanced to third where he would be driven in on a Logan Foster sac fly. Andritsos tripled and with two outs came in to score on a Frizzell RBI single. The Aggies final two runs, came on a Cornell error this time with the bases loaded off the bat of Helman. A&M 7, Cornell 0.

B2 | The Aggie kept it up in the second beginning with Hunter Coleman going yard on the second pitch of the frame. After Foster tripled, it was Andritsos playing long ball for the second time this season. A&M 10, Cornell 0.

B3 Cornell (0-2) reliever Jeb Bimess gave up six runs in the bottom of the third. Highlighting the frame, DeLoach and Andritsos drove in runs with a triple and double respectively. A&M 16, Cornell 0.

B6 | With one out and a full count in the sixth, Baine Schoenvogel powered out his third career homer, first of the season. Later in the inning, Allonte Wingate collected his first Aggie RBI driving in Frizzell. A&M 18, Cornell 0.

B8 | Wingate’s sac fly drove in Frizzell for the freshman’s fourth run of the game. After scoring their 20th and 21st run of the game, Andritsos stepped up to plate looking for a single for the cycle. After coming up single less in his last three plate appearances, the sophomore delivered with an RBI single up the middle, joining DeLoach as the only Aggies with cycles in the last seven seasons. A&M 22, Cornell 0.

“I was just trying to get even with ball and make an adjustment from last weekend. I guess it paid off and it comes down to them, all the ABs throughout the week have just been great so we just continue to add on. ”

On completing cycle in the eighth …

“It was an interesting thought, everyone made it obvious that I needed a single, and so you just try not think about it. You just try to barrel the ball up, stay flat with it. No you can’t change your approach and chase one hit, so you just continue what you are doing. Just build upon what you have done so far. I was a little bit, but everyone ahead of me did their jobs and add on. It is just another piece to the puzzle, no one stood out everyone just continued to hit the hard fly balls.”
