6 Takeaways on San Francisco 49ers 2016 Schedule

To me, every team is dangerous, in any given game. Then you have annual changes where good teams go down, bad teams rise. So having the 'hardest schedule' is mainly for discussion boards.

Do like we play the Rams out of the gate, best chance against a rookie QB.

I don't understand why they waste division games on the opener. Why? People are at max excitement, that's when they should have the games people won't watch. But then again, SF at Rams might qualify as a game people ignore anyway. And it would be sad to lose coverage to baseball on your opener.

Got to love the NFL. We Finish in last in our Division and we have the TOP SOS. Makes no sense. THen for the 2nd year in a row we start the year on late Monday night game and then go to the East coast in week 2.

For me a little optimistic at this point, main reason is our unsettled QB situation.

You really don't get it, or just denying how the schedule works.
Az finished 1st at 13-3, and will play two other 1st place teams that SF won't.
Redskins 9-7 and Vikings 11-5 ( +8 )
SF finished last at 5-11, and will play two other LAST place teams that Az won't.
Bears 6-10 and Cowboys 4-12 ( - 12 )

Az won't play themselves, 13-3 twice whereas SF does play AZ twice at 13-3. ( +20 )
SF won't play themselves, 5-11 twice whereas AZ does play AZ twice at 5-11. ( -12 ) .

So there are 12 games on each schedule that are IDENTICAL.

The NFL does last place teams a favor and gives them two games against OTHER (2) last place teams, where it makes your schedule easier. But, you still HAVE to play the 1st place team in your own division, twice, which makes your schedule harder.

In those 4 different games, SF scores -12 + 20 = ( + 8 )
Whereas AZ scores -12 + 8 = ( - 4 ) .

So YES, overall AZ has an easier SOS than SF, mostly because they, SF, have two 13-3 games on their schedule that AZ doesn't.

It pretty simple, want an easier SOS, then finish 1st, and have other teams in your division do poorly.
Earn a harder SOS by finishing last, and having the other division opponents ALL finish 8-8 or better.

Yeah it just sucks to have the toughest schedule. I would like to see the comparison of other last place teams.
Even when 49ers finish 1st we still had one of the toughest schedules. So in a way it doesnt matter.

In the big picture, there are no easy games no matter what. So you respect each team and prepare accordingly.

What is considered 'frustrating' (for players) is long travel COUPLED with a monday or thursday game. then add in an early east coast game time, and its not helping. But other West teams face similar conditions too, so it isn't unique to the 49ers. Kelly is supposedly into 'bed checks', so i'm sure our players will get their necessary rest.

I agree.
Now that Tod Leiweke is the 2nd in charge, he will hopefully back the West Coast teams on scheduling matters.
It might have helped this year, I haven't checked all WC teams schedules yet, but I know Seattle ONLY has 2 10am starts, as opposed to the usual 5, (max 6 possible) Now only max of 5 that StL is in LA.

Check out the schedule the year after Seattle won the division with 7-9.
The other division teams that had the entire NFCW on their schedule would have had a huge break in SOS, having 4 teams with sub .500 averages. Even the other NFCW teams schedules would have been easier, having 6 division games against sub .500 teams.

The NFL schedule as far as opponents go, is REALLY fair.

Now, dates, times, byes, back to back east coast road trips, etc, that is where the NFL SCHEDULE must improve.

Yeah, some years one team has more, another year they have less. No way to make it exactly even just the fact of where your City is located. But between West Div. teams it should 'even out'. Teams just have to focus on the games best they can, not on travel.

It is we fans who'll blame losing on anything and everybody. :-)

I agree with you on the last part. Like I said this is back to back years 49ers start on the late monday night game and then go to the East coast in week 2. Week 2 we play Carolina who starts the season on Thursday night so they will have 3-4 extra days to prepare for us and they are at home.

SOS IS good for fan discussion, and there are things worth nit picking. Fans need topics to discuss and this IS a good one whether realistic or not, whether overrated or not.

For me, things changes too fast in the NFL. Four or five teams that were good, declines the next season. Then four or five teams rise up from the prior year. You never know which team will beat you even in the comfort of your own stadium. That's why i don't take SOS as "all that".

Lol. You have obviously researched this quite a bit. I really don't care that much and haven't looked into it. Supposedly we have the toughest schedule. It is what it is.

In this particular instance, yeah it does seem unfair. If possible, West OR East teams, shouldn't have to travel "coast to coast", following a Monday night game.

THIS year Seattle appears to have a favorable schedule, in terms of times, home/road alternating, except I wish the BYE was later, but it is what it is.

Last year, Seattle faced 5 teams coming off their Byes. That's incredible. Talk about extra time to prepare.
