Let's try to predict how this would have went after the horrific injury suffered by Dante Fowler last week.
How would the top 5 picks have unfolded?

Well, first of all we know how the first 2 picks would go.

1: Tampa Bay - Jameis Winston
2: Tennessee - Marcus Mariota

This brings us to number 3. No brainer.
3: Leonard Williams - Clearly the best player in the draft. He should go number 1 and he still might.
4: Amari Cooper - Raiders want a receiver for their franchise qb to throw to, and he is polished and clearly their guy.

Which brings us to number 5. We are on the clock! Before we get to the contenders, let's realize what goes into making this decision.

The Experts know best. Remember these are guys like Draftblitz:Tony, and Draftblitz:Jaimi, cbssportline:Richie, who spend hours and hours each week scouring the internet for other mock drafts, and finally editing and saving their work to their blogs or web pages. Many of them know each other(Tony and Jaimi probably do). Some will even watch youtube videos of players who are expected to be drafted. Dedication.

Our History. Week up the middle, but sneaky fast around the edges. This has enabled us to reel off seasons of at least 3 to 4 wins every year. Remember, if we draft a guy that gets 8 sacks and let's say our defense is on the field for 1000 plays a year(just over 60 plays a game x 16 games), that is a whooping .008 percent of plays that he has had a direct influence on the game. Now factor in the near sacks and the 2 or 3 false starts a season where the tackle jumps too early. You can't go wrong with this ideology.

Ok, the contenders.

Vic Beasley. Did you see him in speedos at the combine! Could be an action hero! Also, when the pro bowl changes format to be an obstacle course of some kind, this is the guy you want.
Shayne Ray. I still haven't seen any video on him, and the foot may be a serious problem. He also has had major character issues, but many mocks have him going here at 5.
Randy Gregory. Has some real concerns, but again...speed! He will put on some weight and eventually replace Rak.
Dante Fowler. Now hear me out on this. Ok, he sits out one year, but then you get everything the other 3 guys are, and probably more. Maybe gets to 10 sacks in a few years. Plus he has gold shoes!

Remember if Leonard Williams somehow falls to us, knock the commissioner down after he announces the Raiders pick and announce him as our pick right after!

This is stupid......but knowing Flowler tears the ACL.....Skins take Scherf again....they could have went with the other 3 but didnt.....

And Gregory...really???...we passed on him in 2 rounds and you are trying to get him at #5 in the first????

You'd actually draft a guy that would sit out a year because of a torn ACL? Not only will you lose out one year of play, he may never come back the same. No way is Randy Gregory on that list for me. 32 GMs passed up on him in the first round. And if Jerry hadn't taken him in second round, he might dropped further. Our biggest need was RT. While we did forego value in taking Scherff at #5, I can see why Scotty did that. Scherff has to be on that list.

Speed kills! Scherff has footwork issues. You never draft a guard that high. Collins is better. Stanford guy is better. Give me that .008 defensive impact any day. We are guaranteed 3-4 wins a season.

Well I know we passed on those guys you listed when we were on the clock.....we passed on 1 of them 2 fucking times......

Am I one of those "oline" guys.... I am if he is the best player for the team, and I was saying with dad and others, I felt taking him would not be a mistake as I felt he would offer more then the guys left on your board there.

And talking about redrafts, still not sure why we picked Austin Reiter and passed on La'el Collins. Hmmm . . .

I think it comes down to character concerns for Scot.......

I get that. But character doesn't win football games. And I'm not sure Collins has a character issue. He might (e.g., DV stuff), but yeesh. Could've used him to bounce out Chris Chester. Oh well.

I agree character alone doesnt win games, but having the right kind of people in the Building sure doesnt hurt!!!

the DV stuff im guessing as well.....and maybe part of it....we have a young team, and he doesnt want to risk the locker room?/ Pure conjecture on my part

As far as bouncing Chester...Maybe he feels we have the someone on the roster or through the draft already

He did say he didn't want to 'embarass' the Redskins. He'd do that if he got someone that had a character meltdown. (Of course, he sign Chris Culliver, but Culliver doesn't have anything presently on the front burner.) I think he played the draft really safe. Reached for Scherff, but filled the biggest position of need on our team. Then took other guys that weren't too sexy, but had a very low bust probability. Still wondering why he passed on Gregory, but word out on him is that the guy has real issues as to whether he loves the game. While that can happen to vets later on in their career -- cough, cough, Albert Haynesworth -- rookies are hungry. Gregory supposedly has issues with that. If he does, how bad would that look if we took him with one of our top picks?
