Catcher: Austin Romine and J.R. Murphy. The Yankees also have Gary Sanchez waiting in the wings, which is why I don’t see them going out and signing a free agent catcher. I think the Yankees need to give these three kids the chance to succeed or fail and then go from there. Blocking them with a free agent for the next 3-4 years is a good way to see to it that all three fail.

First Base: Mark Teixeira holds this spot, but if his wrist doesn’t show significant improvement you could see them bring back Lyle Overbay or Mark Reynolds, this is also a potential landing spot for Derek Jeter, but that’s a long shot at best. Other possibilities are Justin Morneau and Carlos Pena.

Second Base: The obvious first choice here is Cano, but if he does get his money elsewhere than the Yankees will not have many decent options on the free agent wire. Alexi Casilla and Kelly Johnson are as good as it gets, if it comes to this they might consider going with David Adams.

Third Base: Alex Rodriguez will be suspended for a significant portion of the 2014 season, how much of it is yet to be determined. In his absence, Eduardo Nunez has the inside track to fill in for him until he returns. If the 211 games suspension is upheld or the Yankees hand him his outright release upon completion of his suspension, Nunez would be the first option. Other options are Mark Reynolds, Juan Uribe, or Eric Chavez. 2013 first round draft pick Eric Jagielo is still a ways off from being considered.

Shortstop: This is Derek Jeter’s spot until he retires or is carried off the field. At this point the latter is more likely, the Yankees really liked Brendan Ryan at SS in September because of his defense but his bat is almost non-existent. Other options are Stephen Drew, Jhonny Peralta, or Alexi Casilla.

Outfield: The Yankees are set in the outfield with Ichiro Suzuki, Alfonso Soriano, Brett Gardner, Vernon Wells all under contract for next year and Zoilo Almonte and Mason Williams coming, but they reportedly have a lot of interest in Carlos Betran. Signing Beltran would mean the end for Ichiro, who would not likely accept a bench role.

Designated Hitter: This spot has been used as a haven for aging stars, which have been plentiful for the Yankees in recent years. Cuban defector Jose Abreu should be on the Yankees radar if he isn't already. The Yankees have no young power bats in their system to speak of and Abreu, 26 (a first baseman) is just that, he will be 29 when Mark Teixeira’s contract is up. Platooning Abreu/Tex at DH and 1B would be very nice.
