Holy crap, Oakland is $61.7M under the cap?!?!? No wonder they struggle.

Hockey got this right when they redid their collective bargaining agreement last time. They have a maximum cap that you can spend (of course), but they also have a minimum that you have to spend on the cap as well. That keeps some notoriously cheap teams from putting together a decent team and that is better for the fans.

Oakland spend close to their maximum last year. Problem was they had so many bad contracts and dead money that they just couldn't hardly do anything to get a decent team on the field. This is the first year that they finally don't have all that dead money to deal with. Last year alone they had $49 million in dead money. So again this is why they actually still hit that floor (and yes the NFL does have a minimum that has to be spent according to the new CBA) but then this season have so much room.

well, a lot will change between now and the regular season and these numbers will tighten up closer to the cap #.

in addition, remember that the salary floor went into effect last season and teams must spend 89% of the cap # over the 4-year period from 2013-2016, otherwise they literally have to write a check to the NFLPA for the difference they should have spent during that timeframe.

Just so long as someone remembers, "Spitters are quitters".

How much is the cap supposed to be going up by this year?

Probably only $3 million or so.

So any ideas on what the Cowboys can possibly do to put themselves in a better spot? They're going to have to cut some players.

All teams have to be under the cap by the start of the new league year. Which I think is march 11th or close to that date. Dallas has a lot of work to do in the next 3-4 weeks.

They do.

I read on NFL.com they might release Miles Austin to save about 6M in cap and because he was so injured last year.

I'm wondering how that Tony Romo contract is looking to them right about now.

So they need to cut quite a few players quickly then. Wow. Looks like their talented roster is going to go down the drain unless they have a great draft.

Well over the last 3 seasons, Austin has only caught 133 of 240 passes thrown his way. A 55% catch rate. Which is pretty terrible. He has 1766 yards over that time. Around 588 yards a season. And he's had 13 TDs over that time, which is around 4 a season. Sounds like a mediocre slot receiver to me. Not even close to worth 6 million. So yeah, he should be cut.

The Romo contract isn't as bad as it could be. Yes, 18 million a year is bad, but at least he's not making Flacco money. Gotta look for positives here :laugh3:

No doubt. It amazes me that JJ doesn't sit back and think for a second "I really fucked this all up." Looking at some of the contracts he approved blow me away and scream mismanagement.
I don't like the Cowboy organization, but I do feel for the hard core fans as this is misery at the utmost level in sports.

He'd have to blame himself and he's just not into that.

He admitted a couple years ago that if anyone else were GM, he'd have been fired by now - then turned around and said, "For me to own the team and not be involved to the level to which I'm involved....well, I've never even considered that"

He has also said he has never been a better GM than he is right now.

Roger Goodell said that he is drug tested every year. So it makes sense if they would start drug testing the owners as well. Not sure what they would do to them if they had a positive test considering they are the owner so they can't really fire them.
