Before we start making a wish list of players from other teams we should evaluate what players on our own team who are going to be FA should be given consideration, and how much salary cap we'll have to work with in 2014

I'm a huge Kenny Britt fan. He has the size and speed that I like. I remember when he was on a roll, until he got hurt, last year. The only thing about him is his injuries and he has had some legal troubles. I honestly think the the Redskins make a run at Hakeem Nicks. I seriously doubt that the Giants re-sign him because of the money they gave to Victor Cruz. Not to mention, Rueben Randle has emerged.

That is the correct way to approach this (no doubt the Skins will do the same).

Based on this list for players becoming FAs in 2014 who either currently have or will command a large salary here is my take on who should stay or go:

In
Orakpo
Riley (making very little now but will probably command more).
Hall (possibly - depends on how much he will request - quite possibly he will play for very little).

Out
Fletcher
F. Davis
Morgan
Moss
Wilson

All of the other 2014 FAs appear to be guys who will make very little and/or are a non-factor. I would not protest too loudly if someone like Doughty was re-signed for the bare minimum (he is not that good but fills in when others are missing & things would probably be worse without him).

Getting rid of the players above along with the additional cap money should allow them to sign several major contributors.

Are you implying that he is overpaid? He is one of the best LTs in the NFL & outside of QB this is the most valuable position for just about every team. Also - notice that after this season if he severely underperformed (doubt it) the amt of dead money for him would be minimal.

I have no problem with him making this type of money. Remove him from the O-line and things will get very, very ugly.

I would actually prefer to re-sign Williams and rid ourselves of the rest. I'm not a fan of any of the following and it appears our offense is moving in the direction of having Griffin make the transition into a pocket passer of which these guys are unable to protect:

Montgomery, Chester & Polumbus all need to go.

I'm not saying go out and sign a bunch of FA linemen but go out and find younger, bigger talented guys who have not made a name for themselves just yet. Flat out maulers who will not allow Griffin to be touched, much like P. Manning.

Agree - regardless of the price tab (you have to understand that QBs, LTs & a few others are going to make up a huge % of your salary cap regardless. This also has to be factored in since RG3's numbers in a few years will probably go through the roof).

As for the other lineman - I am pretty sure that Shanahan & co. agree but have been handcuffed due to the cap sanctions. I am sure that they will go after at least one premium FA in that area next offseason. With Shanahan's reputation in that area that should help them significantly.

From your list......DHall...Maybe depending on what he is looking for as far as cash goes....

Disagree with Moss....he is still a dependable slot recevier...At this point of his career, he wont be looking for, or expecting a BIG money deal.....


I believe Aquib talib will be here next year...He wanted Washington but we couldn't afford him.....He is on a 1 year contract, and I believe next year he will be a member of the skins

The cap sanctions & boneheaded moves by the Cerrato regime has prevented this to a certain degree recently.

Moving forward they should be able to more closely mimic the old Eagles model where you get rid of guys as they start declining. I am hopeful that with more money being available they will head in that direction. As for Talib - it all depends on how much he is asking & their perception of his health moving forward. What I don't want to see is a return to the Cerrato philosophy where everything revolves around obtaining high $, sexy FAs. The approach has to revolve around building a true team & not around the popularity of certain players.
