Tonight will kick off the new season for the ECHL. I'm curious to know if we've picked up any more folks around here (with the CBS/ESPN crowd & all) who hail from ECHL towns & make it to any of the games. If so, this is the place to chat about your team. :suds:

My Ft. Wayne Komets start their campaign tomorrow night, vs. Toledo. After dominating various 'lesser' AA-level leagues in recent years, the Komets found themselves out of their depth upon joining the ECHL last season, and got mired in the bottom of the standings, losing their affiliation with the Anaheim Ducks. They have revamped nearly 75% of their roster, & are looking to establish some credibility this year.

I'm not sure that I'll make it to as many games as I have in previous seasons, but I'll be there tomorrow night for sure. :)

Just got back from the home/season opener: The Komets took the Toledo Walleye to extra shooters in 2O before letting them escape with the win. - And this game never would have gone into extra innings, but for a complete brain-fart moment - passing the puck across the front of your own goal while an opposing player is parked at the top of the crease :L - by the Komets' defense.

Otherwise, they looked a good bit more like a team that has a chanced to hold their own in this league as compared to last year (I know, I know... it's only one game!).

Finally made it to my 2nd game of the season, as Ft. Wayne hosted the Greenville (SC) Road Warriors. The Komets are looking more & more like a team that is prepared for ECHL level play, as they matched Greenville stride for stride & attack for attack in a very up tempo game. They held a 3-2 lead for most of the 3rd, but Greenville forced the game to OT before Ft. Wayne pulled out the win.

*****

As often happens in these minor league games, there was a corporate sponsor 'hosting' the night - and hawking their wares. Tonight it was the replacement window co. Window World, who brought along former IndyCar/NASCAR/NHRA/Sports Car driver John Andretti (they had been his sponsor for his last two 'one off' Indy 500 appearances) for an autograph session. He was always a favorite of mine, & I got to chat with him for a couple of minutes, which was cool. :)

I was always a fan of the Andrettis. I got to meet John at North Wilkesboro many years ago when he was driving for Little Ceasers. He looked so much like Little Ceasers logo everybody was trying to get him to say "Pizza Pizza".

When I lived in Virginia it was great to go to the Admirals game in the ECHL. It just didn't seem to be the same thing when they moved up to the AHL.

The Komets were victorious against one of the ECHL's better squads, the Florida Everblades, 4-2. - This was in spite of the refs ignoring a lot of pretty obvious holds & cross-checks that Florida committed.

I mean seriously; when they've got your goalie on his back with two arms wrapped around one of his legs, that's a penalty of some sort or another, right? :noidea:

Did a little more looking in to this story: It seems that the Indiana Ice (USHL) aren't going anywhere - for now. I was a (partial) season ticket holder with them for three years, so I hope that they can hold on.

can Indy support two hockey teams?

As for the Fuel; I'm not liking their colors (too close to the Komets' anyways) and I sure hope that somebody will spend five minutes to come up with an actual, honest-to-gosh logo.

... But I do like what I see of the renovations at the Pepsi Coliseum!

The Komets just hosted the Reading Royals for the 2nd consecutive night. Unlike last night's 5-1 @ss beating, the Komets hung tough enough to take this one seven shooters deep into 2OT before losing, 2-1.

... And no, the Royals didn't wear those holiday sweater jerseys. :(

Just got home from the Komets' annual New Year's Eve game. They handled the Toledo Walleye 5-3 in a game where, for once, it seeemed, they played better and with more heart/hustle as the event wore on. :)

I see the Toledo Walleye's head coach has a bobblehead night coming up in a couple of days - the promotion is anger management night.
